It depends on the passenger. For example, take-off is often the scariest part of a flight for someone who is afraid of flying, but it's often the best part of the flight for someone who loves to fly. Most people are somewhere in between.

Unless you're part of the flight crew, you can die of boredom if you don't bring a book to read. Starting is slow and gentle (it would take a lot more engines to get a plane going as quickly as you can get a car going.) Once you're a few thousand feet up, you'll hear a "whump" - that's the landing gear being drawn into the plane. Then it's yawnsville until you land.

Your chances of dying in a fiery crash on the freeway are MUCH grater than your chance of even getting hurt on a commercial airliner. There are very few drunk idiots at 37,000 feet.

The landing can look scary - flying along at 100 mph only a few feet above the ground, but don't worry, the pilot's done it MANY times before, and in that very same plane. The worst that can happen is a little bump as you touch the ground. (And a squeal of the tires - which it completely normal.)

The one and only
nar, it feels good

If you've never been on a plane before then you get a little freaked out when it starts moving and picking up speed on the runway. It goes really fast so your ears may pop when you take off so make sure you're sucking on a sweet of something to prevent this :)
But I love flying, I think it's a really good feeling knowing you're in the sky. If you're scared of this thought, just don't think of it, read a magazine

Elizabeth,

No, not really. I have been on quite a few and I haven't ever been scared.

I think the strangest time is when you land. There is a few bumps after the wheels hit the runway but it's not scary. They tell you everything before it happens over the PA.

When I was 15 I went to London and I just had to think about it being like a car. Know that the pilots are VERY WELL trained and that chances are you will be a-okay!

It's kind of like surgery... Once you have had one then it's nothing after that! If you really think it might be rough for you take one sedative with you (like tylenol PM) and take it right before.. You'll be napping in no time.

Good Luck!

Cass
