Are the airport security guards armed?

Again, it depends on where you are flying into and out of, but usually the security guards that man the security metal detectors are NOT armed.

Some countries have separate "Guards" who very visibly carry some type of weapon. Otherwise, the TSA agents in the USA are not armed... just trained on the machines they use, and I would think also are trained at some type of basic self-defense.

A good rule to follow would be this... if they are armed, you will know because you WILL see the weapon.

Hope this helps - and Happy New Year!

Depends on what country you are in. In the US there are usually some armed guards although the regular TSA agents who are at the x-ray machines are not armed.

It depends on what country you are in.

If you're ever in Israel, check out all the firepower their airport security guards are carrying!

Usually the TSA or CATSA (Canada) will have their front line agents un-armed but are trained in basic self-defense. At Pearson International Airport (Toronto YYZ) they are in Peel Region so the Peel regional police deploys ETF teams to the airport and they are heavily heavily armed. They are the only armed individuals in the airport except for Customs Agents.
