United have this policy for Minors under the age of 18..
You can travel alone without parential consent. The policy is though.
Under the age of 18, all minors can not receive overnight accomdiations on the airline's expense based on a cancellation and most hotels won't even allow a minor to have a room for the night.
The same rules as like working at a restaurant like McDonalds applies to the airline industry:
All minors ages 8-17 can not get the last flight out of that specific airport and the minor can use a direct flight or connecting city flight.
An adult over the age of 18 have to purchase the ticket for you.
Please read the link below as it will better detail any problems or concerns. This is mostly the same thing with every airline you look at.

Some airlines will let hildren over 12 fly as adults...that means they will not have supervision and the parents do not have to pay the extra fee for an unacompanied minor.
"The service is mandatory for unaccompanied minors 5 to 11 years old and optional for 12- to 17-year-olds." This is a direct quote from United airlines info on kids travelling. American, Continental , and Delta set the age at 15. You really need to check with your specific airline.

If you're over the age of 12, you usually (depending on the airline) have the option of choosing whether or not you would like the unaccompanied minor service. After 16, this service is no longer available to you whether you like it or not =]
Let's say you were United with Delta from New York to Boston and you're 14. You could choose whether you wanted the service or not.
