Are you allowed to check cardboard boxes (as opposed to bags) at the airport?
Yes. Each box counts as 1 bag though. If it is over 50 pounds, you may not be able to check it at the counter, it will have to be send via freight (depends on the airline).
diamond
Yes, why not.
Cary C
The simple answer is yes. Just make sure its duct/thick tape well. The airport still have the right to open and check inside if they choose too even though they have x-ray machines. Thats why they dont want/allow locks on the luggage anymore.
Lindsey
Yes, you can - I've done it quite a few times before.
You can get more cubic space from a box, as you can get a 20" cube which has lots more room than a suitcase of acceptable dimensions.
You do need to tape/seal it very well, as the baggage handlers aren't any more careful with them and they can break easily.
They are still allowed to open it for inspection.
You will still be required to fit within the normal size and weight restrictions for your ticket (what these restrictions are depends a lot on where you are flying and what class of ticket you carry).

While waiting for my checked in luggage I've seen some very interesting "bags"...
Cardboard boxes, a Styrofoam cooler, plastic bags.
Paul McDonald
Sure! People do it all the time, at least three or four per flight that I've seen.
papars
Yes. Provided they are properly packed, strapped, wrapped and contain nothing hazardous.

You can only still bring one item of hand luggage onto the plane with you for safety. You can check in as many bags or fragile boxes as you want but if you travel with a budjet airline like FLYBE(British European) you will be charged for the more baggage you do take.

Yes. A bit of advice though: you may want to tie some rope around the outside so you have some means of carrying the box with one hand or grabbing it off the luggage conveyor.
