J hon, it's statistically fact that air travel is the safest form of travel. More people die walking than in plane crashes. It only seems so horrific as a couple hundred people die all at once.

Air travel isn't bad at all. Just remember these tips. Fly with a major carrier. their planes are newer, better maintained and their staff is more professional. I have flown with many. I personally recommend British Air and Continental. I have had my best experiences with them. Also, on long flights, choose an aisle seat, if possible, rather than a window seat. Other than near the start and the end, you are usually above the clouds and cant see much. On a long flight, you need to get up and walk about a bit to not get cramped and you will need the loo at some point.

There's nothing to fear. Go see the world.

It is still the safest method of transport, I don't like flying. But its a necessary evil for me and my kids to see the world. I like the take off and landings I detest just being up there. I didn't fly until I was 18 but my kids flew from babies and they adore flying.

I have a fear of flying and have to get pills from my doctor. I know it's safer than when I'm driving my car, but I'm in control of most aspects of my life apart from flying. Why should I let an irrational fear stop me from going out and seeing the world? They say travel broadens the mind and I would agree with this. If you've never even been on a plane how do you know you won't like it? If you don't try things you never discover things you really like.

Marguerite
I am with you. I feel the same way.

More chance of being killed on the road in the UK than dieing world wide in a plane crash.
Less that 1800 world wide last year!
More than 3500 on the roads in the UK last year.
Just do the sums!

Generally, yes, you are. Airplane crashes are not frequent occurrences. I am not a huge fan of flying, but not big on driving much these days either (I've already totalled three cars). I just remember that flying gets me there a heck of a lot faster and gets me further. Without flying, there are places that I probably never would see, and I don't want to be that sheltered.

Definitely, much safer in the modern air-crafts. Pure statistics:
Air-craft versus surface-craft!

Your chance of being involved in an airline accident is roughly 1 in 11million. Your chances of being killed in a car crash are roughly 1 in 5000.

http://www.fearlessflight.com/airplane-disasters-plane-crash-statistics

" if you're a bike rider, a dog lover, or a bath taker then you're at far greater risk of being killed in an accident than you are from riding in a commercial aircraft. Don't forget the other kinds of accidents that killed more people than aircraft crashes--stinging from bees/wasps, slipping on ice or snow, choking on food, or falling down stairs or off ladders. It's a dangerous world we live in! And please don't forget the 600 Americans who are killed every year from falling out of bed. "

I used to be terrified of flying but knew my fear was irrational and I had to face it.I hated it at first now I quite enjoy it and have travelled extensively. Some air companies actually do flights specifically for people scared of flying to help them overcome it.

The most dangerous part of travel by plane is the way to the airport!

I wouldn't get on a plane until two years ago, no amount of begging by my hubby would convince me to get on one, then our best friend had a serious car accident and we had to get to Dublin asp as they didn't think she would last the weekend, as a flight was our only option I had no choice but to board that plane and go, I am so glad I did, she came through it and I have been like Alan Wicker ever since, Cuba twice, Australia twice, Dublin 6 times, I feel safer in a plane than I do in a car any day, wish I had had the guts to get on a plane years ago, but making up for it now.

If you're flying through mid-air I'd say the plane was safer. Come to think of it you'd still be safer in the plane when on the motorway!

majoti
car is safer because when the car engine fails it doesn't plummet thousands of feet afterwards

You are safer on both. It is depend on how can manages the pilot and the driver. Why should you scared? We should always prepared our self and have a strong faith.

having flown hundreds of times ..i cant see your problems ..never felt scared ..ever ..but i will tell you this ..Ive been so close to accidents whilst driving ..majority of times through no fault of my own .. i feel a lot safer up there than i do down here ..there are no drunk or drugged up pilots for a start ..get up and go ..its real fun
