I really don't think flights are going to be very cheap this summer mostly because of the gas prices. However, due to all the flights being canceled by airlines lately, they may want to rebuild goodwill so you might see some fare bargains after they have all been checked out and are back up running normally.

I'm also going to California in July and also on a budget. I've been looking every single day for lower fares. Usually on Wednesdays is when Southwest has low fares. Also, try checking the specials they have. Right now, if you travel b/w certain dates (before June 25th) you can get the flight for $99 each way depending on the city. There are flights for $105 right now each way. I'm not sure how low you want to go though.

I always use JetBlue. It is cheapest out of American and United...I believe. :)

The best prices we've found have been on Priceline. Also, flights into smaller airports are more expensive so concentrate only on the largest regional airport nearest your destination city. And book several weeks in advance and not on week-ends. Best wishes

If Southwest Airlines is an option, now is a good time to book with them. If you need to use any other airlines, it's best to wait til about 3 or 4 weeks prior to departure for the best rates.

Flights are not really cheap right now - especially with some low fare carriers going out of business or declaring bankruptcy, and the increase in fossil fuel prices (which affects the airlines).

Some advice is to check out the sites that poll other sites, like Kayak.com and Sidestep.com. Also check out southwest.com because you are talking about going to California.

You don't say where you are going in California, but check alternate airports, like San Jose or Oakland instead of the very expensive San Francisco. Try traveling on Tuesday or Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday - those days are traditionally cheaper.

You don't say where you are coming from, but check bus and train if it is not far.
