Old enough that they can sit still for 8 hours at a time and not annoy people around them. It might be 6 or 15, it depends on the kid. Last thing I want when I fly is a crying baby on the plane with me. |

It's not the age as much as the child. We took my two year old on a fairly long flight and he slept the entire way...was a dream. Then, when he was about 3, we took him and my 18 month old on a flight...the flight from hell because my 18 month old screamed the entire time because he would not sit still in the seat with the seat belt, was kicking and screaming. I had brought toys, bottles, you name it.....he would not sleep, would not sit still.
SOOOOOO, if you have a child that falls asleep pretty easily in a car, you might have better luck getting him to fall asleep on the plane. Definitely bring something for him to suck on during the flight take off and landing, as the pressurization can hurt their ears a bit and the sucking motion usually takes care of that. (unless your child has a cold/stuffed head, then I would not take him on the flight at all because his ear pressure would be terribly painful. )
Bring small things to amuse him like hand puppets u ntil he is tired enough to fall asleep.
Good luck! |

Wait until he is 18 years old.
No one wants a crying baby near them for any flight - especially a long flight. |

The younger the better. I was 24 years old when I took my first flight and was scared to death. The best thing to do is start them flying early so that they get use to it and it isn't such a big deal when they get older |

"I flew when I was one month old! It was okay for me!"
"I flew with my child for an overseas flight, it wasn't a problem"
Let me be honest with you all:
1) It WAS a problem, just not for you
2) It WAS NOT okay, just not for you
DO NOT -- PLEASE -- TAKE A CHILD ON AN AIRPLANE!!!
(background noise of people complaining because "you obviously don't have any children" and "what if you have to fly?")
You are sharing a flight with the other passengers. Your child will not be able to go through the entire flight without irritating other passengers. Do you plan to refund their money to them so you can fly?
PLUS -- it's really bad for the child. They don't have the inner ear development to handle the changes in air pressure, they don't have the coping skills for the confined space, the other smells, the extra people... it's just not good FOR YOUR CHILD.
Never mind what it does to everyone else on the flight... |

My kids started flying when they were 6 weeks old. I took my son when he was 6 weeks old to my mom's. It was a 1 hour flight. In his first year, he flew across the country to visit my in-laws as well. When they are super young is a great time to fly; all they do is eat and sleep. What I would suggest is to buy a separate ticket for him so that you have more seat-room on the plane. He can lay down on the seat, take snacks and things he likes to play with. There is no reason why you shouldn't travel with your baby. Have fun!!!! |
