Austrian Airlines or British Airways LHR<>VIE?

Which would you say is the better airline with which to fly?

They are both great.
You should think about future flights. One World or Star Alliance?
If you use more frequently Lufthansa,United,SAS,Swiss, maybe you should fly with Austrian and collect milleage with star alliance.

British Airways is a member of Oneworld, other members are Iberia,Finnair,Cathay Pacific,Lan and American Airlines.

I have flown with both and both are great. BA may be a little cheaper though. But your luggage will arrive more quickly at Vienna with Austrian...

Both have their pros and cons. If you are flying on Austrian, you have to use the awful terminal 2 rather than BA from terminal 4.

Once you're on board it's much of a muchness, but if you're on Austrian, make sure you book on one of their services operated by an Airbus 319/320/321, and not a Fokker or CRJ, which are horribly uncomfortable aircraft.

I personally prefer the seats and on-board services on the Austrian Airbuses, but there's very little in it. The online check-in and bag drop facility for BA is very good at Heathrow, but Austrian have an in-town check-in at the City Air Train terminal in Vienna, and fully automated desks at Schwechat, so it balances out.

Have you considered flying Niki from Stansted? This is part of the Air Berlin group, which, although low cost, is full-service, and has recently won a 'best short-haul airline' award.

This year I flew Austrian Airlines from Amsterdam to Tokyo on a business trip. Being that I am U.S. based and typically fly United, for this particular leg I flew Austrian (Star Alliance partner). I flew business class, and as soon as I walked onto the aircraft they knew my name, and immediately worked to make sure that I was comfortable. They did not bother me, as many airlines do for passengers in First and Business. They checked in, always on a Mr. "Last Name" basis. Very impressive service. I don't have a preference honestly and here's why: all airlines make mistakes, all have good days/bad days, all are under financial strain and can't afford to give you the world. At this point, I just want to be comfortable. Austrian did that for me this year, however if I fly them next year it could be a totally different experience.
