Don't wait 'til you're ON BOARD OR BOARDING, and then ask a Flight attendant to do it for you! They have enough to do during a very hecktic time...and by that time, it's usually too late. Some of the previous posts are correct...there are a number of options available to you well BEFORE you get to the airplane. Who is it you actually called?? Expedia?? Why would they care if you're sitting together? They sold you the seats, it's up to you to do the rest...they got their money.
Either call the airline you're flying and ask them directly if they can get you together, or get on their website, and do it yourself. Those seating charts change as people change their reservations, so keep checking the site...you'll have to be diligent and do some of the foot work yourself at this point to get what you want.
For all you know, that might just have been the case...if the flight is full, perhaps all they had available were single seats...Expedia was certainly in no position to change someone eles' seat assignment to accommodate you. If the call or the website visit doesn't produce the desired results, then plan 'c' applies, and you can check with the ticket counter where you check your bags, and then finally with the gate agt. If all that fails, then...bring a good book, and chalk it up to experience.

Do not wait until you get on the plane when checking in ask the first agent if they still have nothing DO NOT wait until last minute to ask the agent at the gate. Agent will be there an hour b4 go up to them ask them if they can move you around normally they will hold on to the boarding passes and half an hour b4 the flt is when they release seats of the people who haven't checked in hopefully they can rearrange the seats for you then. When buying a ticket it is not guaranteed that you will sit together. You are just buying a "seat" not a specific assigned seat.It is very normal to have people not sitting together of course the main concern for seats is when there are parents traveling with their children and they are not together.

Don't wait until everyone else go up to the person at the check-in desk near the gate to the plane, call the airline and see if s/he can get it arranged before the day of the flight.

It sounds like you've already tried to change seats on the phone. You could try again later, another agent may be able to help. In addition, look at the seat map during web check-in just after the window opens for web check-in and see if you can get the seats you'd like then. Or come to the airport extra early and see if something has opened up then.
Last, as others have mentioned, you can try at the gate or on board, but if it doesn't work out chalk it up to experience. Next time, you may want to use a travel agent or some airlines' package website, sometimes they have been more helpful than Expedia.

Go to the carriers web site and see what seats are availlable, then call the airline directly and request them. They will usually accommodate you so you will book with them next time instead of through a travel site. Travel sites reserve a bank of seats and thats all they are allowed to sell. I`ve booked on sold out flights before, buy going to different sights that still have a seat left. Or if all else fails go to the airlines direct web site and see what is actually left. They do over book still to make up for no shows.

It might be an inconvenience but so what? It is just a few hours.

Don't wait until you are on the plane. Go up to the person at the check-in desk near the gate to the plane, and see if she can get it arranged before everybody piles on the plane.

Usually the flight attendants are helpful in getting someone to switch seats with one of you, so that you can be together.
If you haven't taken the trip yet. I would calmly and nicely ask the flight attendant for assistance.

this has happened to me before, the flight attendents will have someone switch seats with you, it will be no problem! this happens all the time

You should tell the flight attendants while you are waiting at the gate. Usually they'll ask around to try to seat you two together. Often they can find someone who is flying alone and will switch with one of you.

I fly frequently and see this done all the time. If you ask in enough time, they'll probably help you.
