Buying airplane tickets online? |
I've done research about how to get the best airfare and after talking to a series of travel agents, I have decided that buying tickets online may be the way for me. Some travel agents are great, but the ones in my area didn't work out so well.
I'm really paranoid about being ripped off. Exactly how safe is it to buy an airline ticket online? Can you write a check?
I really want to do this but I'm scared of getting screwed out of all my money. Anyone know how to do this safely? How does it work?
My trip to Spain isn't until November but if I wait, I realize I'm taking a gamble. It would be a shame if I see a good deal now, pass it up because "something better might come along" and come October, the prices are outrageous.
Maybe this question will sound ineffably naive to others, but please humor me because I risked my life, and sacrificed my sanity and my health to learn perfect Spanish and earn the money to go... and I've worked all my life so I can go to Spain and I'm 29 now!! I am so ready.
Thanks, if you can help. Gracias de antemano. Additional Details Thank you for your "buena onda"
The last time I bought airfare, I looked up all these deals online printed those suckers out and took them to a travel agent and this lady was really nice and knowledgable and found me a ridiculously good deal for Mexico City. I went to this same agency and they were like, "She doesn't work with international customers" and I thought, WTH... I talked to another agent and she sounded like she was screwing me.
I'm paranoid but it's not that I'm mental it's that peopel have tried to take advantage of me. Thank goodness for these forums, I wish I had some way of thanking you. |

I would use a trusted website like Expedia.com or travelocity. You need to pay by credit card. Don't worry, it will be fine! Or you can go to the airlines website and purchase a ticket through them if it m akes you feel better. Make sure you print off all reciepts and confirmation numbers just to be safe! |

You cannot write a check for an online purchase. You'll need a credit or debit card.
First, visit expedia.com, orbitz.com, travelocity.com, priceline.com, etc. Compare prices on them and find the cheapest. When you find the airline with the cheapest rates, visit the airline's website and see if they're offering tickets cheaper on their site. If they are...purchase the ticket directly through the airline. If the former were cheaper, purchase through one of those.
I've never had a problem purchasing a ticket online. Just use reputable sources like expedia....travelocity....etc. You know, sites you've HEARD of.
Once you've purchased the ticket, keep the confirmation email until after you've made the trip. That way if there is a problem, you have documentation that you did in fact buy a ticket (I've never had to use it). |

It's definitely safe to buy tickets online. But for your piece of mind, even if it means paying a little bit more, buy the ticket over the counter. There no point getting all wired up and stressed over this, do yourself a favour and get it via the less stressful way possible and look forward to your trip without having to worry about what IFs.
Have fun! |

Good answers above. I just wanted to stress that you should never use a debit card, always use a credit card when buying online. Debit cards don't give you the protections that credit cards do.
If you're paranoid about your credit card being stolen (which won't happen if it's a secure site--look for the lock at the bottom), it might be good to get a second card with a very low limit, like $1000. |
|

Im awesome & that pisses you off
|
no you cannot write a check.
buying online is perfectly safe so long as you go directly through whatever airlines you plan to use United, Delta ect. or go through a reputable travel website like travelocity.com, hotwire.com orbits.com ect.
if its a website youve never heard of i wouldnt enter any credit card info.
i am going to hawaii in 2 weeks, and bought my ticket through hawaiian airlines back in january. got an amazing deal. better than any travel websites.
really do your research first. |

I buy my tickets online all the time, but I use priceline, travelocity or the airline website. I always use a credit card. Credit card companies have lots of power in reversing charges if the other company doesn't live up their end of the deal.
You actually will find better prices within 2 weeks of travel. You are going to get outrageous prices right now. I never buy tickets until 2 weeks before. Were talking a huge difference
Tokyo to Pittsburgh months in advance runs around $2700-$10,000 for a roundtrip tickets... 2 weeks in advance, $1200-1700. I travel this route all the time.
Also flying on Tues, Wed, Thru will also yield lower fares. Also check surrounding airports. You could save a few hundred dollars just by going to a different airport. |
