Can I fly without their permission?

I have just finished high school and I'm taking a gap year in 09. I had planned to fly to Ireland and visit my extended family in Octoboer - but my parents put a spanner in the works by saying 'no' today. They believe that I should be using my money to get ready for university. I believe that if I have worked hard enough for my money by the end of the year, I can afford to do both - but - if worst comes to worst - I was just wondering: Do I need their permission to fly over to Ireland by myself - can they stop me?? Cheers
Additional Details
Yes. I will be just 18 when I go. And I'm not trying to disrespect them at all I just do not believe that they are seeing my view point. And also - I would of course tell them instead of just leaving the country - I would not alienate myself - they will love me no matter what I do. Thank you to every body for the answers. =)

Yes you can fly without their permission, Don't forget your Passport. The other consideration you must think about is your cost of college/university. Whatever you make this summer with or without the trip to Ireland will not be enough to pay for your 1st year of school. You parents may love you but they may also choose to exercise there parental option of not helping you with the cost of you education or assist you in get education loans if you choose to disregard their guidance. They are doing this not to control you but to help you put priorities in place. Do a couple local trips that are less expensive. When you've earned your degree and making the big bucks then you can do many of those Ireland trips and do them in style.

You can't go overseas without a parent's permission if you're under 18. Even if you could, I would strongly advise against it--that would just prove to them how irresponsible and immature you are and won't trust you again. Are you planning on moving out and paying for your college tuition all by yourself along with all of your expenses? Are you willing to alienate yourself from your parents over this? If you answered "no" to either of these questions, then I would not try it even if you are over 18.

18 you are considered an adult. As long as you will be of age no they can't stop you.

It depends on how old you are. And where you are flying from. In most cases that I know of, a person must be 18 to cross a border without parental consent.

If you are over 18, no you do not.

If you are older than 18 years, then no, they can't stop you. You don't have to have their permission if you are 18 or older.

However, they may be a bit angry with you if you go anyway, when they said no, but they can't do anything about it. ^_^
