Can I take a duffel bag on an airplane? 10 points to most informative.?

My duffel bag is 28" x 13" x 24". I've never flown before, so I don't know, but If I can't put it in the overhead thing above the seat or under the seat, can I check it?
I'm flying delta from the Louisville International airport. It says nothing on their website about duffel bags.
My mom said that you can't check a duffel bag because it doesn't handle the same way as a suitcase.
wtf? Is this true? If it won't fit with me on board, can I check it?
Thanks in advance!

You can check a duffle bag. I've done it many times, and so have lots of other people.

Here's what Delta's website says:

[quote]If your carry-on bag doesn't meet these size and weight restrictions it must be checked, and all checked baggage rules will apply. Your bag must:

Weigh less than 40 pounds (18 kg).
Not exceed 45 inches (length + width + height).
Fit easily in our SizeCheck® unit (approximately 22"x14"x9").
Fit in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you. [unquote]

So technically, your duffle bag is oversize and theoretically you would have to check it. But in my experience (most of which I admit has not been with Delta) lots of people bring things bigger than that on board without difficulty. But be prepared for the possibility of having to check it.

It looks like your bag is slightly too big to count as normal baggage. The Delta website says you add the dimensions of your bag, and yours adds up to 65 inches but they say you can only have 62 inches. If you use that bag, they will probably make you pay extra. It's definitely too big to fit as a carry on. (22x14x9).

Can you borrow another bag from someone else?

No. Most airlines' baggage policy is that the length, the width, plus the height must not be above 55 inches. So, you will have to check it for a $15 dollar fee. You could bring a smaller bag and not have to pay the fee, and bring it onto the aircraft with you.
Here are the restrictions for carry on bags' dimensions on every flight:
* Weigh less than 40 pounds (18 kg).
* Not exceed 45 inches (length + width + height).
* Fit easily in our Size Check unit (approximately 22"x14"x9").
* Fit in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.

But, Delta's policy is 45 inches added up, so you can definitely not take it onboard. Sorry.

You can take a duffel bag as long as its within the size requirements... check another airline website to see their requirements they're all the same... but if you cant fit it in the overhead or under the seat you have to check it before your flight. Your mom has no clue what she's talking about. You can bring any bag on the flight as long as its small enough... or else you can just check it. Its as simple as that.

Maximum size for a carry on is 45 linear inches meaning length + height + depth. Your bag would be 65 linear inches, so no you cannot carry your bag. You can check that bag though. It doesn't matter if it is a dufflebag, but it should be under 70 lbs. I traveled to Hawaii with a duffle bag and I had no problems. You can check snow skis or a guitar. I don't think they will have a problem with your bag.

Be sure to check with your airline though as many have begun to charge for checked baggage. News reports have that carrier, Delta, charging $15.00 for the first bag checked. Call to verify or just be prepared to pay up to $25.

Per Delta's website, you can carry-on bags up to 22" x 14" x 9"; yours is significantly larger (unless it's only half full and you can compact it). Even if they let you carry it, it would probably have to be gate-checked because you'll be on a small plane out of Louisville.

You can check duffel bags without issue. However, don't put anything valuable/fragile in them because it WILL get tossed around. Maybe only put clothing in it?

THIS IS THE REQUIREMENT FROM DELTA AIRLINES. YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK WITH YOUR CARRIER TO BE CERTAIN THAT THE REQUIREMENTS ARE THE SAME:

If your carry-on bag doesn't meet these size and weight restrictions it must be checked, and all checked baggage rules will apply. Your bag must:

Weigh less than 40 pounds (18 kg).
Not exceed 45 inches (length + width + height).
Fit easily in our SizeCheck® unit (approximately 22"x14"x9").
Fit in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.
HOPE THIS HELPS. HAPPY TRAVELS!!! : )
