No, you can not have any devices that send or receive signals, that include the cellphone and text messaging.
And NO. it will not cause the plane to crash, that only happens when the plane is about to land, the electronic equipment will mess with the radar and flight navigation on approach.
The inflight ban is most likely so that planes are not tracked by unathorized third party. |

Anything that sends or receives a signal is banned during flight. It's not because the plane could crash, but because it could possibly interfere with signals to the plane from the ground. The highest risk is during take-off and landing. Most (pretty much all, actually) airlines choose to ban them during the entire flight to be safe and not run any risk.
Besides, you'd likely run your battery down very quickly, since your cell would be working overtime trying to find and hold onto a signal. |

No, because that would mean turning your phone on, and it's not on the list of approved electronic devices that you can use above 10,000 feet. Plus, you won't get service in the air. Bring a book, magazine, games, or DVD player. Usually on the longer flights the airline will show movies or television programs. Have fun. |

Probably not until after the captain turns off the seatbelt sign, Better off asking the agent of your flight first just to be on the safe side to avoid losing your phone until you land in LA. |
