Can a person wear a parachute on a regular plane flight?

Planes do go down, a few every year. I've been skydiving many times. I know if I sat by the door with my chute on, I'd have a real good chance of survival. Is there some problem with that?

i don't see why not only you are going to save ya self so why NOT ware a chute§§

Yeah, if You're a Geek.

No you goofball, The aircraft exit doors won't open in flight anyhow, so it's kind of a moot point.

.
suits with built in parachutes...IM GONNA BE RICH!!

Thats right, you can pop the door, jump out and get sucked into those 8 foot engines. The only problem is that most accidents happen at lower levels when taking off or landing. It be a bummer if you jumped out and landed in the Atlantic ocean only to find that your flight made a safe landing. Your answer, yes, but you would look kinda weird wearing that thing especially on a commercial flight. Please don't tell me you look foreign. Makes it even worse.

Well the doors on an airplane will not open while in flight, so if the plane was going down you would go down with it unless you can get the doors open.

kimmyisahotbabe
No, they don't allow it. But, a good idea is to wear a long rain coat and baggy pants. If you're able to get out of the plane, you can undo your pants and pull them partly down, spread your legs, and grab the corners of the rain coat, an impromptu parachute. It could make you the only survivor!

There are parachutes that are small and can fit under your clothes, they use them for flying gliders, but if they caught you with it you'd probably get hassled because they'd think you were going to bomb the plane or something.

Better yet, don't fly.

IndyOracle
Only if you want to be very, very uncomfortable... There is not enough space allowed in normal seating configurations. Also, most aircraft have no exit that would provide safe bailing out.

Rosesharon
Don't let the pilots see you. Do you suck your thumb, too?

Sure why not. Just make sure it fits in the overhead compartment and weighs no more than 7kg. LOL

If you really skydive, then you should know how stupid this question is. When you've been skydiving, do you jump from a plane that's rapidly descending, or one in straight and level flight?

Most crashes occur on takeoff or landing, so even if you could get out of your seat, to a door, and get it open, there'd be no time, and not enough altitude for the chute to open. If the plane suffered some sort of breakup at altitude, you'd be far too high & fast to survive the jump. If there was a catastrophic failure that did not cause a breakup, the plane would be descending rapidly. If the plane was not under control, there's no way you could get yourself to an exit and jump out safely. If it *was* under control but damaged, you'd probably be far better off staying with the plane than jumping out over unknown terrain.

As far as the parachute itself, they do make some types for aerobatic pilots that basically pack into a seat cushion/back, and are relatively comfortable to sit on. If you think TSA will allow you on a commercial flight with one, you've been spending way too much time at altitude with insufficient oxygen.

No, and even if you did, in most cases you wouldn't have time to use it anyway. most crashes either happen near the ground, or are so catasrophic in flight you wouldnt stand a chance. there is only 1 know exception. the hawaiian air flight that lost its roof many years ago. if you were sitting in back and could walk up wind of 100mhp to the open section and jump out without getting sucked into the engine, then maybe, just maybe....
is your parachute rated to open at 400+mph?

dairyland26
Yeah, but i dont know if you could get through TSA with that. :)

At least one person attempting to board an aircraft with a parachute was not allowed.  This was before 9/11, I'm sure that airlines are even more sensitive about anything which might worry other passengers than they were before.

Not that a 'chute would help you.  Ground collisions, airplane brought down by a microburst, mid-air collisions, explosion in a fuel tank, vertical stabilizer breaking off, bomb in the cargo, shot down by the Russians, terrorists flying the plane into a building... you'd most likely have no warning of a crash, no way to get out, or be killed as part of the accident before you could get clear and hit the silk.
