It is an optical illusion you are seeing. If a plane were to stop in mid air it would lose all lift and fall to the ground. (Actually this would happen well before it lost all forward motion) |

no, but they have hold which looks like it is not moving, it is actually going very slow. |

yes! they can stop at mid-air, but than they are falling down like a stone!!!!!!!!!! |

Its either an optical illusion, or a very windy airport. Landing jets need to travel at about 150km/h relative to air-speed. |

only chopper can hover!!
what you see is totally optocal illusion, actually the plane is going to touch down where the plane decrease the speed to about 300mph... that is slow for aircraft as aircraft supposed to cruise at 800mph... |

No science necessary. It must be an optical illusion, winged aircraft (planes with wings as opposed to say helicopters) need forward motion in order to stay in the air. When an aircraft reaches a speed that is not sufficient to keep it in the air (stalls), it still carries forward momentum, but the air passing through the wings is not dense enough for the aircraft to have "lift" (controlled upward motion). Sometimes aircraft can change speed at a rate that it APPEARS that they have come to a standstill. |

You are seeing an optical illusion. But I know what you mean when an airplane is coming straight towards, or away from you. If an airplane stopped in the air, it would lose all lift, therefore causing it to fall. In fact it would go down well before that happened at its stall speed, when it can't maintain lift. ATC will tell them to speed up, and usually to slow down, but no they can't just stop. |

Yes, that's when they fall out of the sky. |

Passenger jets can't stop in the air. They will circle while waiting to land. VTOL jets like the British Harrier have engines which can turn and allow the jet to hover, but this option is not available for commercial aircraft. |
