Of course they can. When they run out of fuel they are up there for a long time......someone has to walk to the nearest gas station with a gas can. |

some plans can take off and land vertically, but aside from that, planes can't come to a dead stop without falling to the ground.. because they rely on wind passing under the wings to generate lift.. |

most of them no the are designed on a way that the wind flowing under the wings keeps them up
the harrier jet can however |

Yes, but it may produce a falling effect. |

well no. i mean they can turn off but they would just fall so theres not much purpose in that.
although some might be able to hover if thats what you mean by stop in the air. |

The Harrier , the US Marines use a jump jet. Arnold Sch. used one in the Florida Keys to stop a terrorist in the move "True Lies". |

In addition to the Harrier Jet, smaller aircraft are capable of doing controlled stalls in the air. Pulling up on the yoke and flying into the wind can slow the aircraft to a point where it can come to a stop. Holding the aircaft in that position for too long will cause the aircraft to do a full stall and will nose down very quickly. Stalling the aircraft is actually done routinely in practicing emergency procedures while learing to fly. |

No keep on moving if the landing is not allowed |

they can stop their engines but not stop like a car |

If the airplane is working properly, NO. Jets arent built that way.
If it stops in the air, then something is wrong with the plane. The only plane that can stop in air is the Harrier. |

The engine can be turned off but the plane will not stop (freeze on air) it will fall due to gravitational pull of the earth |

No.i my opinion i think they cannot stop in air as thy are very huge and many people travel in it |

For the vast majority of aircraft, no. However, some military aircraft can stop (hover) such as the aforementioned Harrier and the F-35. This is done by vectoring thrust (directing the exhaust gases) on these aircraft. Any aircraft that can create thrust that is equal to the weight of the aircraft can, in theory, stop provided that the aircraft can be maneuvered into a vertical state. Other aircraft that can fly slow enough in a strong headwind are able to stop relative to the ground (sometimes even backwards!), but not relative to the airflow. |

only certain aircrafts such as the helicopter can stop moving around too much in the air. Jets or regular airplanes cannot. if they did then they would fall to the ground becuase there is no thrust to prevent it from falling. |

Almost always as the result of a cataclysmic disaster - mechanical failure, bomb, etc. At jet speeds it basically causes a huge whiplash leaving the passengers w/an internal decapitation - the head is still attached to the body, but not the spine. |

I heard that they can. |
