Can birds fly as high as a plane?

or is the air to thin for them

Show all answers

Toby J
Birds wouldn't survive at the sort of altitudes that commercial aircraft cruise at. The air would be too thin to keep them in flight. They would have great difficulty breathing with such low levels of oxygen, and they would quickly freeze to death as the air temperature is around -50c.

Depends how high your plane is flying. Frequently birds have been sucked into a planes engine at low altitudes and have caused plane crashes. Though this is rare.

if the plane is mid-take off or landing then im sure it would be possible to see them careering along side by side

A type of geese actually fly over everest,The highest mountain in the world.

If your plane is cruising at 1,000 feet above ground, maybe, but otherwise no. A jetliner cruises at 34,000 to 39,000 feet and the only birds up there are in cargo containers.

Connor D
i guess they might have to find out the hard way

The highest recorded flight for a bird is 37, 000 ft, a passenger aircraft about 40,000 ft, some military aircraft twice that height, so it depends on which plane your talking about.

Some birds fly at around 10,000 feet and make use of warm air currents.

Most incidents of bird strikes with planes occur on take off and landing.

sammy
depends what kind of plane ur talking about... a passenger plane or cargo plane rarely has any insidence with birds(only maybe by taking off and landing) but with low altitude planes birds could be sucked in the engine causing a misfuntion and u could end up crashing.
like u said, the air is too thin for them... but ofcourse birds could travel as cargo... then yes...:P
