Let's see. Stick your finger out in front of the hamster when it's hungry. Think of that same hungry hamster loose on an airplane. If an air carrier allows you to take a pet hamster on the airplane, follow the guidelines. If not allowed, do not go against policy. Hamster = less than $10.00. Airplane with damaged wiring = compromise of safety and possible lost lives. Seems insignificant but in reality, it is very serious. Check Fed-X or UPS. Happy hamster + happy owner = happy relocation. Hungry hamster + loose on airplane = potential aviation accident report. Have a great summer in your new community. And remember, only the air carrier you are traveling on can actually answer your question.

Unfortunately, taking a hamster on a flight is not an option - unless you can get a psychologist to write a notarized statement saying it is a "support animal" for you and that under the American Disability Act you cannot be denied the hamster to travel with you in the plane cabin. This has successfully worked for a person with a full-grown potbellied pig.

Since it would cost more than the value of the hamster to contact a psychologist, I would suggest giving it to a friend or to a school.

Could you drive there? I mean, how do you intend on getting furniture and stuff there? You could also leave it with other family members. Then when they come to visit you, they can drive and it would be easier on the pet. I don't think putting it on the plane is good. But you could call the airport helpline or whatever and ask them about it.

Check out Delta or Delta Dash. Delta was the only airline I could find that would let you bring different species of animals. American airlines will probably ship it in cargo, but you can only take dogs and cats on board. That is who I am flying with and I have to ship my bird as cargo.

You could drive to Oregon. You may, somehow, find someone is is driving from IL to OR and pay them to take it. Mabe look at Craigslist or something like that. Actually kind of curious though, I never heard of anyone moving by plane, don't you have furniture or anything?

No there isnt anything you can do for it. Airlines will not transport hamsters, because they will die anyways due to the gravity. Just buy a new rat when you move. OR you can give your hamster a map and see if it can find its own way there. Chances are though it will get ran over by a car, and eaten by another animal.
