Let's take a look what the IATA database tells which is used by aircraft carriers to determine the right travel documents of their passergers:
Passport required.
- Expired British passport (no time limit) endorsed British Citizen is accepted.
- Expired British passport (no time limit) endorsed British Subject is accepted, provided being Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies, having the right of abode in the U.K.
Of course you may travel home on an expired passport!

If you are in fact a U.K. citizen, they can hardly keep you out of your own country, but it might "cost you" (extra charges and fees). Why not spend a phone call to the British Embassy or Consulate nearest you and find out what is what?
American citizens can return even without a passport, but -- as I said -- it costs! I forget what the charges are now. |

I would say no but maybe you can.
This site says.
British citizens must hold a passport (can be expired for up to one year), http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flight-guide-to-Spain/
You should really check before booking your tickets. |

I travelled from Belfast to London on a passport that was out of date by four years a while back. I couldn't believe I got away with. I was ready to hear someone tell me "don't be such an idiot. go home and get a new passport!"
I was so nervous before check in though...I wouldn't risk it. Especially for international flights. |

No of course not, that is illegal. You will probably get out of Spain no prob, who looks at our passport seriously, they only ever glance at it to see if the boarding pass and passport match, but on your arrival in the UK, the UK Border patrol will nab you. I have no idea what you will face then, knowing the Brit establishment you could face 10 years in jail......who knows.....:) You must travel on a valid passport at all times, if it has run out you can contact the British Consulate in Spain and they will renew it, for a fee of course! |

Definitely not. You need to go to the nearest British Embassy who may be able to give you a tempory permit to fly back to britain. |
