Technically YES however it is not an easy accomplishment. You do need to prove that you are required to carry an armed weapon and there will be forms to fill out by you as well as a superior.

An example if you are a police officer transporting a prisoner, you may need a concealed weapon. Your "boss" in this situation will be aware that it is something nessacary for you and should have no problems filling out the forms and giving you the forms you, yourself need to also fill out for this clarence.

If you are wanting to carry a gun on to a plane because you are going on a hunting trip or because you are just a weird person who likes to have a gun on a plane for no reason than the answer is NO.

I worked for an airline and have seen TSA close down an entire airport because someone tried to bring one one gun through security without reason. This person was arrested.

Actually... yes, but under conditions:

1) The gun must be declared
2) The gun must be in the checked baggage, not carry-on
3) Ammunition must not be included
4) It must be in a proper gun case

TSA also has some other requirements. A lot of people fly in to Kansas City, Wichita, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa with their hunting rifles and shotgunts. It is possible and not entirely uncommon to do--you just have to follow the rules.

Sporting guns can usually be checked into the hold as long as you report it to the airline in advance of travel. Munitions of war cannot be taken on an aircraft, either as checked or hand luggage, although there are exceptions to this if it is permitted by the appropriate civil aviation authority.

I don't know if there are instances when you would be able to take it as hand luggage - I am guessing it will depend on the airline, the country in which the aircraft is travelling, etc etc etc.

Even if you are travelling with an airline that allows you to check a shotgun into the hold, there may be exceptions - for example, when I worked for British Airways, they couldn't be taken onto Dash-8 aircraft because there was access to the hold from the main cabin, although it was unlikely anyone would actually be able to get as far as accessing the hold, rummaging through all the baggage and then locating & loading a weapon.

If you are actually serious about taking a weapon I would suggest you check primarily with your airline and then if necessary with the appropriate aviation authority.

Guns and Ammunition – Firearms and ammunition are not permitted at the checkpoint. TSA is still seeing an average of two firearms a day and dozens of instances of live ammunition brought to the checkpoint. Passengers transporting guns must carry them unloaded, in a locked, hard-sided container, and must declare them to the airline at the ticket counter. Then, they can be placed with checked baggage. Ammunition must also be placed in checked baggage.

This is not an airline regulation, but a Federal reg.

Check it with you luggage and fill out a form. You can't take it with you on the plane unless your a Air Marshall. If you were you wouldn't be asking.

You can pack a gun in your checked luggage. The gun must be unloaded and in a case and the ammunition must be in a separate hard case. Check with the particular airline for any further guidance. Unless you are an air marshall, you may not bring a gun on the plane with you.

You can usually check one with your baggage to be stowed beneath the plane but you cannot take onto the plane with you.
