For your 2nd question:

01 You can connect a GSM phone with GPRS activated on it.
02. You can apply for WiFi Broadband / Data Cards, currently being offered by Reliance, Bharti Airtel, Tata Indicom, MTNL, BSNL. Data Cards can be purchased for about USD 70/-. Rental and usage charges extra. Speed may vary between different service providers
03. You can apply for a Broadband connection from these operators.
04. You can visit cyber-cafes and access internet. (You need to carry ID proof, which is mandatory now-days due to security concerns on unsolicitated emails)

For 1st Question,
If u r using the laptop for personal use, and do not wish to sell it, then I suppose, the Customs Official at the Airport should not be concerned. If required you can declare that the Laptop is for personal use and you will take it back when u plan to return, in due course. That is what normally done, when expensive items are taken from here to other countries by passengers. Moreover, do take extra care with your luggage, laptop and other belongings.

If its your 1st time here, trust nobody.

Answer to your extra questions:
Since u r planning to come down to Punjab, I hope u would have asked someone to come to the airport to welcome u. That person can show his ID (Driving License, Passport, etc) at the cyber cafe. The cyber cafe owner may take the photocopy of the ID proof, register in his records, and allot a registration numerical number against it (This is quite common in Delhi, Some of the girls use their boyfriends ID's. LOL). This way the actual person will not have to come to Cyber Cafe again and again, and u can use his ID number for Net Banking and checking mails.

Do remember never to reveal your banking details to anyone, and make absolute sure that u delete details of all websites recently visited by you. Also when u leave the cyber cafe, write down the time of finishing the session.

As u have stated that the cyber cafe is a little far, and other options not possible then, I would have only to suggest that something is better than nothing.

On course, you can take your notebook to India, especially inside your bord case. Even perhaps they will not allow you to use it during the flight. The Communication standards are worldwide the same. So you can get connected via LAN-Cable or even wireless (WLAN). In India you can also use or buy a card with that you can enter the internet being mobile (WLAN, HDSPA, GPRS, UMTS). But it depends to the area, where you are/go. In modern cities there is full mobile internet service available, while in a village perhaps you can only use the GPRS or perhaps you may have no connection at all.

taking laptop in plane is not a problem with valid documents.

ok now India has 230V 50Hz AC Mains supply and if your lap top power adapter's AC input is not that then you should get an adapter to suit Indian Power Supply ( normally 180 to 250 V Ac Mains).

Something else means charge it through UPS that is better at least AC power will be steady 230-240V

youcan take lap top in plane there is no problem with that ..... you might not be able to use the internet..... just see to it that the laptop do not contain pirated softwares and stuff..... and almost all laptop companies are now present in india ..... so you will have no problem with customer servic either.....

and when it comes to charging at most you will need a connector since here in india we have round pins instead of square pins..... but most plugs are round and square connectabe

i have a compaq laptop which i brought from US and it needed no modifications to the charger or anything

you will have to take up an internet connection thats provided in india

in india hp is one of the most widely used laptop in india with a good service network.....

why so bothered about a laptop if you thinlk its going to be difficult using it here why not get a better laptop in india

Yes you can take a laptop on a plane. On some planes they have internet connection but they may charge you to use. These days Indian customs officials do not care about laptops because they are so cheap in India. Most (95%) laptop charging cables can work with 120 volts (Canada) and 230 volts (India).
