Yes you can. For Revenues and Customs purposes, Gibralter is considered outside the EU (see note further down).

For some odd reason that I have never quite understood, while 18 is the age to buy cigarettes in a shop it is ok to buy them in a duty free store (or restricted airport areas) at the age of 17.

What you could do is buy them when you land in the UK, but buy them 'airside'. This means before you have gone through customs & immigration.

The UK Revenues & Customs website specifically says this in regards to Gibralter:

Although Gibraltar is part of the EU, it is outside the Community Customs territory. The Customs allowances for outside the EU therefore apply

To purchase cigarettes you will be required by law to produce photo ID stating that you are of legal age to do so.
I can think of many other Christmas presents that are NOT known to cause Cancer! What a great way to say "Merry Christmas!"

NIknak
No im afraid not you have to be over 18 to purchase on a plane.
You may be able to get them from the country you go, but you have to be 18 to bring them back into this the country too, so if you get caught they will be confiscated.

spartansparta09
i dont think they check for id on the plane because i purchased some for my brother when i was on an international flight, but i think it depends what airplane your are on. Good luck

Stephen M
do they even sell cigarettes on planes?

just buy them in the duty free shop

B-Ridge
If your outside the US who would care

Phoenix
Smoking is strictly prohibited on airplane. There is no airplane selling cigarettes.

If you get cigarette from a duty free store, depends on each country, in the US you must be 18. When you check in your luggage, the xray will show or the dog will identify as cigarettes and you may have to leave at the airport since you're under age.

Don't put yourself in the situation that'll delay your flight. It's not worth it. You can get cigarettes anywhere if you need to buy for someone as present.

sallye1950
I really doubt that anybody could buy cigarettes on a plane,,,regardless of your age...

kevin friend
if your 17 you can buy them legaly in the uk, which country are you flying from
