the really strong ones can.

But the ones that you guys will face, that is up to the pilot and the flight controllers. I'm no pilot, but i personally think its not strong enough to cause any major delays. Maybe cause a couple minutes delay, but not that long.

For take-off and landing, winds are only a problem if they are very strong or gusty, or if they are blowing strongly across a runway (instead of parallel to the runway). Many airports have multiple runways running in different directions to take care of the second problem.

During the rest of the flight, winds are only a problem if they are blowing very strongly in an inconvenient direction. For example, if a flight is forced to fly into the wind during the cruising portion of the flight, it might take longer for it to arrive at its destination. And if an airplane is flying in the same direction as the wind, it might arrive early.

A 20-mph wind is not a problem for airliners at any time of the flight.

it depends on the speed of the wind

Neil
A 20 mph wind, if steady, is no big deal in and of itself. Planes take off and land (as much as possible) into the wind. Taking off or landing into a stiff wind just means a lower ground speed is required.

Other things that may accompany a 20 mph wind, though - rain, snow, hail, and especially lightning - may be a big deal, indeed.

Gusty and/or changing winds are also much more of an issue.

FamousNYLover
Depends on airplane.

My return trip from CLE to LGA was delay because it was small Continental Airline flight and because of snow conditions and strong wind.

yes if it is volient (spelled that wrong)

It depends on the wind and the plane. Every aircraft has a crosswind limitation imposed by the FAA. If the wind is stronger than that limitation then it can't fly (legally).

winds can certainly plan a factor in flight delays wether 20 mph is enough is hard to say

southwestskywaitress
Is the forecast for surface winds or winds at flight altitide.

Even the strongest headwinds will only reduce the speed by a couple of per cent??
