No, you cannot bring an unloaded gun on board an airplane. Only Federal Air Marshalls, Federal Police, and certain local police officers can fly armed. Also, pilots fly armed a lot these days.
For the normal passengers, you will have to check your gun in the cargo hold. All you would need to do is declare the gun in your bag when you check in and fill out a "firearm declaration" tag to place on the locked case the unloaded gun must be in.
It's not a lot of red tape, but I wouldn't fly with my gun as they have been known to disappear.Either TSA searches your bag and forgets to put it back in your bag, or it could get stolen by someone else. |

Absolutely no. The only place that guns can be on the plane is with your luggage in the cargo hold, and you have to declare it beforehand. And I'm sure there's a bunch of hoops to jump through and forms to fill out. Try going to the website of the airline you're traveling on to see what the rules are. |

You must transport it as a checked luggage. You can't have it as a carry-on. |

No, Bob, you cannot bring a weapon onto a commercial aircraft. If you attempt this, you will end up in front of a federal magistrate.
Your permit was probably issued by a city or county government. You are not allowed to carry outside of that area. If you are caught, you can be imprisoned for a concealed weapons charge.
