Can you carry a guitar onto a plane?

I am flying to Denver and want to take my guitar. It is unforturnately in a soft case and I don't feel confident in it being well taken care of. Can I carry it onto the plane?

Muscial Instruments are no longer allowed as carry on items if they are longer than 22". In 2004 the FAA imposed these rules and it still has been a hassle to enforce. For years you could, but it is no longer allowed if the item is larger than the dimensions for carry on. The item must fit under the seat or in the over head compartment, but NOT take up the entire compartment space. Flight Attendants are no longer allowed to store items in their closets either. Items are not allowed to be gate checked and you will be returned to the ticket counter and miss your flight in most cases. Passengers are no longer allowed to voluntarily gate check items with the acception of wheel chairs and baby items such as strollers and car seats. If you do some how make it through security and the gate agent catches you attempting to carry the item on, it will be tagged and returned at baggage claim, NOT plane side. All checked baggage must go through the bomb detection system, instruments included. The only way to carry on a musical instrument is to buy an extra seat and restrain the item.

Go to the airlines website that you are flying on and read about Musical Instruments. THIS IS AN FAA GUIDELINE and airlines must make it their policy.

This is from http://www.faa.gov
The maximum size carry-on bag for most airlines is 45 linear inches (the total of the height, width, and depth of the bag). Anything larger should be checked.
No oversize packages or luggage can be stowed onboard.

From http://www.delta.com
Small instruments, such as violins, will be accepted as your free carry-on baggage item if it will fit easily within our SizeWise® unit (approximately 22"x14"x9"). Most standard sized guitars are longer than the 22" maximum and cannot be accepted as carry-on baggage.

I don't know for sure, but I just traveled two weeks ago and saw a young man get off the plane carrying a guitar case. That was American Airlines. Call the airlines.

You used to be able to, but check with your airline.

yes, they might put it in piolot cabin

?
Yes you can carry on a guitar for most flights if the flight is not too booked. If you do not check your guitar (since it is in a soft case I would not) and they DO make you check it at the gate to get on the plane, your guitar will be the last thing loaded and they usually take good care of these items. If you do get to take your guitar on the plane...try to be in line quickly so when they call your zone you will be one of the firsts to get on the plane. That will enable you to be able to secure an overhead bin for your guitar. I travel with guitars quite often, and I have only had to check my guitar at the gate once. Good luck and Happy Trails!

I usually have to gate check mine, but a few times the captain let me put it in his coat closet. You might want to ask one of the flight attendants. No matter what you need a good hard case.

No, it has to fit on the carry on measurement box, if not you have to check it in.
