In the US the answer is Yes to both. For the poster who said she works for the TSA, perhaps she should review their website.

Per the TSA Website http://www.tsa.dhs.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_multi_image_with_table_0099.shtm:
As of August 4, 2007, in an effort to concentrate resources on detecting explosive threats, TSA will no longer ban common lighters in carry-on luggage. Torch lighters remain banned in carry-ons.

Lifting the lighter ban is consistent with TSA's risk-based approach to aviation security. First and foremost, lighters no longer pose a significant threat. Freeing security officers up from fishing for 22,000 lighters every day (the current number surrendered daily across the country) enables them to focus more on finding explosives, using behavior recognition, conducting random screening procedures and other measures that increase complexity in the system, deterring terrorists. The U.S. is the only country in the world to ban lighters – all other nations, including Israel and the U.K., do not.

fritz_le_cat
depends on which country. usually yes.(and lighters DO NOT explode on planes....)

Look Away, I'm Hideous

I smoked a joint on Lufthansa....Germans are cool about smoking. In Germany, there are no non-smoking sections in restaurants.

Maybe it depends where you are but in Australia you can have cigarettes and a lighter, I once got told that I was only allowed one lighter, but they were in my pockets, other times have carried cigarettes and two lighters in my hand luggage and it didn't matter.

In China it dosen't matter at all, In Thailand it dosen't matter either.

I smoke a lot and I always have at least one lighter in my handbag when I travel. Plus at least 2-3 packs of cigarettes.

Only one I was requested no to bring more than one lighter in my handbag, and in other cases I have never had problems with this or the number of packs of cigarettes.

No gas explosions or any other urban legends.

Enjoy your flight!

Yes to the cigs . . no lighter. Matches are okay though.

Nothing Flammable at all! goto TSA.gov for the lists on what is allowed and forbidden, it changes all the time . Look for the travel/carry on restrictions list. You'd be amazed.

Square Pants
yes to cigarettes but no to lighter..

even if you can bring cigarettes on-board, you should know that you're not allowed to smoke for the entire flight..

lovejuice
you cant have cigarettes but you can buy them and you cant have lighters for obvious reasons

no, the reduction in air pressure causes the gas in the lighter to expand and the lighter exploads. You have to empty it of gas before boarding. Petrol lighters can be kept in the loading bay, but not with hand luggage to my knolege

hope that helps
