Can you receive calls on your cell phone while flying on a plane?

"Can you?" - yes you can. I don't know about at all altitudes, but I've heard them ring and seen people use them (until the stews descend on them!) Plus you know lots of people got calls from the hijacked plane that crashed in PA on 9/11/01 so they do work at times during flight.

However, according to the announcements they give on every flight I've ever been on, they say not to use them while in the air. FAA regs.

No its agains FAA regulations- once the cabin doors close- cell phones must be turned off - and can only be turned back on when you have landed or when they announce it

High chances of you being able to receive and make calls as when your mobile is on, they will automatically search for an available network unless you have re-set it to search manually. If the network is strong enough, you will be connected.

However, I think you should know the rule of having to switch off all electronics devices before getting on the plane. So don't try experimenting as the technical crew will know that someone did not swtich off their handphone as there will be interruptions in the cockpit devices.

Chev
Many airlines say when the engines are running they must be switched off also.

vinsam007
Everybody is correct...however, the reason you are not allowed to use a cell phone is..coz airplanes have very sophisticated electronics that help it perform various functions. Many of these include keeping the cabin pressure arrangement, communication equipment and cell phones can interfere with these electronics.

soccerknocker199
they have to be turned off you cant have them turned on so you shouldnt be worriying about that

Allison P
No, you are not allowed to receive or make any type of phone call while you are in the air, your cell phone is supposed to be off or on "airplane mode". You can make/receive phone calls once you land.

Hope this helps!

Michael P
At the moment its against EASA and FAA rules to have you phone switched on so make sure is OFF before boarding. But soon in 2007 airlines could be fitting there aircraft with special equipment so you can use you mobile while flying, it sounds great but there are still some issues that will need approval. When its fitted you will have to pay a lot of money to talk and the flight crew can restrict you mobile phone.

So for example you can only send txt msg and not be able to make a call. The crew will have a box fitted somewhere in the cabin were the can select to activate mobile phone calls or select so you cant use them at all.

I hope that not every airline will allow you to make phone calls as it will be annoying to hear peoples silly ring tones going off and people speaking loudly. The worst will be the business people I cant imagine sitting next to someone on a mobile phone talking for an hour about how the stock exchange went.

But for now all phones must be switched off and I hope it stay that way.

I love Johny Huff
Yes but you can't hear them, because your phone HAS to be off.

Strudders67
You're not allowed to have your phone turned on whilst flying. However, when you land, any messages will be waiting for you.

Gist
your phone will be roaming and jumping from network to network, can be expensive, probably unable to keep a call, higher altitudes won't work, plus you battery will be dead or really low.
