There's only one site you'll need to visit to answer your question: kayak.com
They'll search literally dozens and dozens of other sites for you (Expedia, CheapoAir, CheapTickets, etc.), as well as the airlines' own sites, thus doing all the work for you to find the best fare.
What's more, they have a "flexible with dates" box you can check, which will pinpoint the cheapest days for travel. You can even have them email you if a fare drops for a given route you've selected.
And no, I don't work for Kayak, I'm just a huge fan. I used to travel with a large group frequently, and we'd play a "game" in which the person who found the best fare won dinner compliments of the other players. I've had many, many free meals because of Kayak.

The best times to fly are during the week, when fares are lower. But since you're flying so close to Christmas, tickets are going to be high no matter where you buy from. Check the airlines website that you are hoping to fly with. If you don't know, check out airline reviews at www.airlinequality.com. Most people head straight for expedia, or other travel sites, but unless you are wanting a package (flight+car, etc.), the airlines website is usually the best place to find good deals. The reason is because travel sites charge airlines a fee for being included in their sites, so it's cheaper not to use those sites for the airlines, which leads to cheaper tickets. If you must fly out on the 21st, try red eye or early flights, because they tend to be cheaper because most people don't like to fly them. However, they are good because there are less people, and you may get better service. Good luck! |

I've found tickets cheap on the 18 or 19 of Dec that would be your best bet and it depends on where you fling from and to. check with southwest. |
