you've got the right idea. Add travelocity in and sign up for fare alerts on any sites that offer it. You can plug in the city of choice and the site will email you when the fare drops.
BTW I do not recommend cheaptickets as they don't inform you of awkward connections (such as those requiring more than one check in process) in your itinerary. Priceline can be ok if you don't mind long layovers and numerous stops.
Be aware that most prices change weekly (sunday night/monday morning) and can be dramatically different. So if you check on Mondays you should get the newest prices - and remember to always compare what you see to the airline's site (they may be lower !) |

Look, behind every website in the world, the "booking engine" (the thing that powers them) is invariably one of the 4 main Global Distribution Systems for airlines. So, you can search for as long as you like, but you will in effect, be getting the result from one of 4 sources. Now, an aeroplane has, say, 200 seats on it. If 200 humans are already booked on it, it doesn't matter where you go, the thing is still full. Next, The discounted or "consolidated" fare contracts offered to websites - any website - are also pretty much the same (as they are for any normal high street agent). So, search all you like but what you will find is, once you establish a fare for your chosen route (I tend to use expedia for routings but their fares can be sh-one -t. As we say in the travel trade "if you are really rich, you can afford to book on expedia") you may find variations of GBP (pounds - I am a Brit) 10, 20 or maybe 25 but never £100, £200 etc. - because all are working more or less off the same fare sheet and availability display. Now, you may find odd routings that are much cheaper (with overnight stopovers and using B C and D to get 100 miles down the road) and odd dates and times, but there is no holy grail flight booking website. Actually, if what you are trying to do is a bit complicated, you could always try asking a good travel agent. |

I vote for travelocity. I've searched for cheap plane tickets on all the flights websites out there and have always come back to travelocity to find the most cheapest and reasonable prices. |

You are going to find the best fares directly with the airlines. I worked for an airline and work for a discount travel website. You will always get better deals with the airline itself. Wesbites add their booking fee's ontop of the fare. You will always avoid that with the airlines websites. For example, I tested the "name your own price" on priceline. Reduced the fare by $75 just to see...by the time they added their fees in, the fare was $125 MORE than what the airline was charging. NOT A SAVINGS. I tried with rental cars. Reduced the daily rate by $15 and came out $75 more than what I was quoted with the rental car company.
These "discount" or "cheap" airfare websites are traps for uneducated people...and yes, Im employed by one, so I can tell you that its true. People dont do the research and do not have faith in the main source. These websites not only offer crazy conections, rediculous schedules but also add their own rules and fees to the bottom line. Should you have any problems the airlines can not and will not touch those tickets. You miss your flight, you just voided the ticket and lost the money unless it was a delay that the airline is responsible for.
IF you'd like some help, send me your travel dates and route and I'll see what I can come up with for you. NEVER use the websites, you really are NOT saving money. Airlines offer packages just as well as the travel sites, and have better companies they deal with.
Travel agents do the same thing...they add their own rules and fee's on top of the airlines. You pay the agent..then they are responsible for posting payment to the airline. I have seen too many passengers get to the ticket counter and their ticket was not paid for. The travel agent had not posted payment. One large name inparticular is guilty of doing this in the worst way, I wont mention because I wont sling mud, but if you can do this yourself, avoid 3rd party sources. Just research and find the best deal.
