I'm looking to visit NYC from DFW sometime this year. I'm not too concerned with when,
My question is, what are some inexpensive ways to fly when you don't care when you go?
For example, I've heard of things like flying standby. What is
involved in each option; e.g. have to stay a week, or only get a seat
if it's available, etc. |

Tuesdays (the lightest day), followed by Wednesdays and Thursdays. Except during holidays, of course. |

The best days to buy tickets, are Tuesdays or Thursdays...two very random days. Standby is when a flight is booked and people cancel out; it's a little hard to catch these flights seeing as they are not announced on line or anything. But if you call the airline (locally) then you should be able to find a cheap flight. Also, invest in mid-week red eyes (a late night/early morning flight that occurs between Tuesday and Thursday).

it is cheaper if you fly in and out during the middle of the week such as Tues/Wed or Thursday. It is also cheaper if you stay at your destination over a Sat night. Red eye flights are cheaper too. I recommend checking out Hotwire.com or kayak.com or any of the internet travel websites. Also booking your flight after midnight helps you get cheaper flights too. Good luck. |

Goto orbitz.com and click on flexible dates on the flight page. You can then put in that you want to take a trip for so many days between now and the end of the year. It will search most of the airlines and provide you the best results. I've used it before and it saves a lot of time verse calling all the airlines or checking a ton of websites. The prices are always very competitive. Once you do get a result though, check on the airlines own webpage before you book on orbitz. You might get a better deal that way once you've found out the dates.

I always fly the redeye flights...They are the ones that fly at weird hours.....Really late or really early....Standby is o.k. if you want to get stranded or end up on the otherside of the country!!!! |
