No... you do not have to purchase your tickets with a credit card, although that is usually the easiest way.
Your frequent flier miles actually come from 1st) openning a FF account with them. Continental FF program is called One Pass. 2nd) you must actually fly on the airline to get credit for your miles.
Some airlines however, do offer you additional FF miles for purchasing things with their credit cards. |

No, you dont need to have a credit card to earn points. You can just earn points by flying with Continental all the time. Credit cards (especially the one linked to Continental's program) are just another way for you to earn points. Thats all. You arent limited to tickets only with that card. You can earn points if you go to the store and charge it on that card. |

You don't have to have a credit card, but you can if you want. The card is just another way for you to earn points. You can get miles just for flying on the airline. |

You can simply apply online for a straight up frequent flyer card and you don't even need the card..... just the number that they give you. You can use this when booking or if you use cash at the gate.
But paying cash at the gate will cost much so it is doubtful that you would be flying that way.
If you use a debit card they most always have a Visa or whatever logo on front. So you book it and provide you flyer # if booking w. the airline directly. If you book with priceline or whatnot you can tell them the number at the gate. Even if you don't do that you can later log into the airlines' site and claim lost miles easily. No debit or credit card... you can do the same with your reciept.
The actual credit card thing is different. If you have a card from that specific airline you usually get a point bonus for signing up. Miles will be credited at a higher rate per flight and every time you use it (for anything) you will get more miles. Once you have taken a flight or two they will usually give you bonuses and send email offers for cheaper flights. |

The use of the Chase/Continental credit card is not necessary to earn miles on them...but it does give you bonus points if you use that card to buy your ticket. You can pay for your ticket anyway you like...just make sure you include your OnePass number when you make your reservation...it's a good idea when you check in for your flight, to double check that they have it in your reservation.
You can also earn miles by flying one of their partner airlines. Continental is a member of the 'SkyTeam' alliance and it's partners include:
Air France/KLM
Aeroflot Russian Airlines
AeroMexico
Alitalia
China Southern
Czech Airlines
Delta Airlines
Korean Air
Northwest Airlines
with associate members:
Kenya Airways
Copa Airlines
AirEuropa
they also have a number of codeshare/alliance partners. They are:
Alaska Airlines
Amtrak
Cape Air
Colgan Air
CommutAir
Emirates
EVA Air
Gulfstream International Airlines
Hawaiian Airlines
Horizon Air
Island Air
SNCF - French National Railway
US Helicopter
Virgin Atlantic Airways
you can also earn miles by staying with a number of hotels, using certain rental car agencies, and frequenting various businesses. Again, just make sure you have your OnePass number available to give to the participating merchants to get mileage credit. Using the Chase/Continental credit card would give you even more miles when you use it. Go to Continental.com and click on OnePass for more details. |

No, you can earn miles using your Continental Airlines credit card (1 mile per dollar, I think - I don't use the card and I fly with AA) and you probably will get bonus miles (20,000 or so).
But with each mile you fly in coach (excluding deep discount fares), you will earn 1 mile. With deep discount fares like S, you will earn 0.5 mile. In business and first class, you earn additional miles. |
