Effective immediately, the U.S. has suspended its policy of allowing travelers to pass through U.S. airports in transit to foreign destinations without a visa if they would otherwise require a visa to enter the U.S. This change has no effect upon Canadian citizens nor upon those who qualify to enter the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program.

In Order to Obtain Your Transit Visa
Transit visa applicants must establish to the satisfaction of the Consular Officer that they intend to pass in continuous transit through the United States and that they have a residence abroad that they do not intend to abandon. Transit aliens must have onward transportation arrangements to their final destination and permission to enter some country other than the United States following the transit through the United States, unless the alien submits satisfactory evidence that such advance permission is not required.

If You do require a Visa I would suggest you Fly directly to Canada from Mexico with

Mexicana Airlines flies Nonstop from mexico city to Calgary,Toronto,Vancouver,Edmounton and Montreal

Air Canada flies from Cancun,Mexico city,Puerto Vallarta,Cabo san lucas to Toronto,Montreal,Vacouver and offers connexting service to all cities in Canada

Japan Airlines flies Nonstop from Mexico city to Vancouver 3 times a week. From There you can take a Bus,Train or Plane to Calgary

Best of Luck

NOLA guy
The USA suspended the "transit without a visa" program after 9/11.

If you need a visa to visit the USA you need a visa to transit the USA.

Good luck!

It will depend on what country you are coming from. If are Mexican then it will not be a problem. You will still have to go through US Customs when in Houston as that is now a requirement.

No, just your passport

Are you a Mexican citizen or are you just departing from Mexico? If you are a Mexican national, or a permanent resident, then you may need a visa. The US State Department website states:

"Citizens and permanent residents of Mexico generally must have a nonimmigrant visa or Border Crossing Card (also known as a "Laser Visa"). The Border Crossing Card, Form DSP-150 is a biometric, machine readable card that is a combined visitor B1-B2 visa/Border Crossing Card."

The fact that you are connecting should not matter. US airports do not have transit lounges like those in many other countries, so there is no separation of connecting and arriving passengers. All travelers arriving on international flights are required to clear customs and immigration, regardless of whether they are staying or connecting. Many foreign citizens try to avoid making connections in the US for this reason.

I suggest contacting the US Embassy in Mexico or the nearest consulate to confirm the requirements. Don't rely on answers on this website. If they're wrong, then you will be denied boarding or deported. Why risk your trip?

everyone is giving you a different answer! wow! i dont know off the top of my head but i work at an airline and it does depend on what country your passport is issued in. call the airline that you are flying with and tell them you are flying from mex to canada with a stop in the US and what country your passport is from and ask if you need one. they will tell you the correct info and you wont have to wonder who on here is right or not.

Dan
No, Denise, as you will technically not be admitted to the USA. You will just be connecting and transferring planes.

Regards,
Dan

No , you do not. See site below and enter your nationality, transit point, and destination, then click for the info. It will give you a long, detailed explanation, but the first line says ,"except for nationals of Mexico" so Mexican citizens do not need a visa.

end is forever

Nope, when they give you the US Immigration Form on the plane, just write "In Transit" on the part that says "Address where you will be staying during your visit" (or where it says "Duration of visit").
