Do airlines have to give their customers free drinking water if they request it in flight?

And if not, can they actually let you die from dehydration if you forget your wallet, don’t have enough cash, don't want to buy etc?

I have asked on numerous occasion (especially on budget airlines – Transavia for one) who flatly refused – so I told them I was going to die if I didn’t take my heart medication without water and they ā€˜found’ some free water pretty quickly – so is this just a stunt to earn more revenue for them?

Is there not a law which states that where food is served that water must be provided free upon request? I think in the UK there might be - any ideas for the UK and rest of world?

Budget airlines sell you cheap flights by cutting out the frills, you can't expect both.

They don't have to supply anything free, and you won't die of dehydration on a flight, but I'm sure they would bend the rules in an emergency.

Since airlines can legally fly you into a mountain...I think the water question is moot.

The airline i fly for will give you free water as the whole service is complimentry. However, its a well known fact that dehydration goes hand in hand with flying (although not where it could kill you!! unless you were on a plane for 3 days straight! ) so perhaps it would be common sense just to take a bottle of water on board with you. There is a difference between complimentry, and taking the mickey!

I previously worked for a budget airline and if you ask nicely there is no reason that free water can not be given. Although personally i would rather spend a pound on a bottle than drink that nasty stuff that sits in the tank for 24 hours!!

I know Ryanair won't give you free water. I was close to fainting and kindly asked for water. They refused to give me any as I was feeling so ill that I couldn't reach for my wallet.

I passed out in my seat, and woke up with 2 free bottles of water waiting for me .

Haven't heard of such a law though. Sounds interesting...

Oh, on this BBC site it says they don't have to give it to you for free:

They don't give free water on budget airlines/low cost but if you fly major airlines( i.e American Airlines, Northwest, Cebu Pacific ) then they can give you free water on request but it is limited. A glass of drinking water should always be free just like in restaurants and other places. =]

I think its ridiculous how they are now charging for small snacks and water on the plane. It should come complementary.
The government choose not to re-enforce laws on airlines. they should to help make things more reasonable especially with all the flight delays, cancellations for no reasons, extra fees for baggages, and now charging for complementary items. Soon they'll probabaly charge us for being overweight.

But of course your plan sounds pretty good. It got you the water you needed.
I should try that next time. Thanks.

Well, you won't die from dehydration on one flight.

Most airlines are not yet charging for water. One that is, US Airways, says it will provide water in cases of medical emergency and during extensive delays. If a desperately thirsty passenger does forget a few extra dollars, US Airways spokesman Morgan Durrant says flight attendants will likely ā€œerr on the side of the customerā€ and give him or her water.

strange... water on planes is always free of charge... by CAA law... I travel a lot and I've traveled with different airlines and they always gave me water with no charge whatsoever...
