No wireless devices of any kind may be used on US Flagged air carriers. All wireless functions must be turned off by Federal regulations.
Aircraft that do allow laptops to access the net, do so by having you plug into an ethernet port on your armrest, and the signal is then routed out of the plane through an EXTERNAL antenna.
Wireless signals CAN and DO interfere with aircraft communications. An airliner is essentially a metal tube with wings, and wireless signals from a hundred or so cell phones or laptops can actually concentrate and increase in strength within such a tube. That's why airlines that do offer internet access, route the signals through a cable, and an antenna mounted on the outside of the aircraft.
Anyone who watched that Mythbusters episode, they got it all wrong in their testing methodology.
The other issue is security. Terrorists used cell phones as the detonators in the bombs that blew up the trains in Spain a few years ago.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. you can't hook up internet on any planes or use cell phones. it could like screw up the planes navigation system

A few airlines actually do offer limited inflight Internet access and several are working on it. However, it is currently available only on a few selected aircraft, not fleet wide. It is still very unusual to be on a flight that has it.
American Airlines has announced that they will begin testing it later this year, but they don't offer it now.

Some airlines have begun to incorporate onboard WiFi access for their passengers. American and Malev have not begun to do this, however.
Cellular phones and devices that transmit radio waves have never been proven to cause interference with cockpit navigation systems. They operate on completely different frequencies, however the FAA and FCC have been reluctant to allow passengers to use their devices.
