Do any airlines still have bereavement flights?

My father-in-law is dying and we will need to go back for his funeral with little notice. What US airlines have bereavement fares? How do I go about checking on them?

Yes, airlines do have bereavement rates and are usually very accomodating. Yoou DO NOT need a copy of the death certificate, as that is private information and very, very much protected by the HIPAA Privacy Act, so why on Earth would you be giving that kind of info (that contains Socoal Security #'s and such) to a stranger at the airline? All the airline needs is a statement for the funeral home stating you attended the service. Do not heed any advice telling you to give someone a death certificate, that is just asking for identity theft.

call directly
you will get a flight fast
but fare discounts rare nowadays

They are not always cheaper then a regular flight.

Also, some airlines may require a death certificate.

Check out this website for an unbiased opinon on breavement flights.

Yes, they do, but most of the fares for it aren't that great. You can usually get a better fare by shopping online. Go to their website and do a search for that information and it will give you the information you need.

Dolphin lover
Ask around to airlines now, but know that in the past, they have charged full, then given a voucher credit back for a partial refund when a copy of the obituary, with your name listed as family, is provided.

For All That It's Worth
Yes, you have to call them, and usually you have to provide evidence that they are dying.

my experience is they are not more than 10 to 15 % off regular fares

Northwest Airlines has bereavement fares, but you will have to call them directly to get this information. Here is their number:
1-800-225-2525. You will also need the following information for this rate:
1) The name of the deceased
2) Your relationship to that person
3) The name, address and phone number of the funeral home
4) Date of the service (funeral)
5) A copy of the death certificate (when you are submitting for a refund after completing air travel)
You may also want to try this site to access further information about bereavement fares (copy and paste this into your browser search window): http://travel.nextag.com/buyer/travel/index.jsp;jsessionid=29E5182CDC985836B56CAA00F498E4A5?nxtg=f80a2005a2-87A210A08959F2D8&type=air&search=airline+bereavement+discount
My condolences to you, and the best of luck to you and your family!
