Do digital cameras get damaged when going through X Ray at airport?

Do digital cameras get damaged when going through X Ray at airport?

Should I carry my camera (canon SD750) with me as a "carry on" or towed away in my luggage upon check in?

No - they are not damaged by X-rays. But you should take your camera on board with you for security reason as well as safety (for the camera). Check in luggage means the camera is out of your sight and more chance of being lost or stolen. Luggage handlers have limited time to put luggage into the plane so they don't handle luggage with loving care like you would.

As far as film, contrary to popular belief - they are still useful. Many photographers still use transparency film because they give such clear and rich colours. These days, airport X-rays DO NOT damage films. It might cause some colour shift if you go through, say, up to 10 X-ray machines before they are used. I still use high definition films for still life photos.

ginger
the only reason cameras get damaged is because it exposes the film. Digital has no film, so no it can't hurt it.

IceTrojan
NEVER check in your cameras and other valuables.

NO, your digicam won't be damaged by the xrays.

mine hasn't yet and its been through more x-rays than i can count.

papars
Depends on the type of X-Ray machine being used. At certain airports in Africa, Asia and S.America, they use vintage X-ray scanners which can cause some harm. Usually, camera-safe X-Ray machines will bear the legend "Film Safe".

Since you are carrying a digital camera, I dont think it will get damaged. However, it would be advisable to remove the memory card, if you use one, before putting the camera in the scanner. Memory cards, I was told, are prone to damage by X-Ray.

I don't think digital cameras will get damaged. If laptops can go through the x ray then digital cameras wont.

Chuckee
No, complimentary metal oxide sensors (CMOS) and charged coupled devices (CCD) sensors are not harmed by the x-ray machines in current use.

I do carry my camera on the plane but only because of luggage thieves and luggage losses, plus in case of a crash I would take pictures and sell them to the newspapers and get rich. =)

Film cameras are ok to put through an x-ray machine also but the film will be destroyed by the gamma rays of the x-ray machine.

Who uses film anymore anyway. I think in the future you will only find film in museums and private collections.

So snap away...

Any Hi Fi gadget for that matter, will suffer minor disturbance, in their software and other sensitive components.
