the air bubbles are supposed to be caused by air pressure as you gain altitude, earplugs or earphones should help because it blocks the entrance to the ear.

Surprisingly enough I think earphone do help (especially the bud ones that fit snuggly in your ear). As everyone else said, chewing gum helps too.

My ears hurt so badly that I cry when I am on a plane. The only thing that works for me is to take a couple sudafed about 1/2 hour before the flight takes off. It seriously works wonders.

Yes, if you buy the correct ones. You can find them at sites like shopping.yahoo and the like. Just do a search under "airplane earplugs". Generally they keep out the big change in cabin pressure during take off and landing which sometimes cause your ears to hurt. Chewing gum or yawning a lot :D can also help. Its usually what I end up doing.
