It's ok to be scared,, some people who fly all the time are pretty much used to it. Just treat take off and landing like a ride in an elevator.
About the turbulence,,, well, you can't really avoid them. It's part of nature,,, treat em like they were potholes when you're driving down the road. We do get worried when turbulence happens. We're worried that people aren't seated and buckled up. Coz when turbulence gets really bad, the plane can drop about a hundred feet and would pretty much send anything that's not tied down towards the cieling. Lot's of people take this for granted and we could not stress it enough. Most of them get pissed, specially the ones laying down when we tell em to buckle up.
Flying is pretty safe, I would rather fly than drive. Think about it. When you're out in the highway, how many teenagers who just don't understand how things might go wrong when they drive a certain way. Not just teenagers, but even other people who has no respect for the law.
When you're flying, you have the best of the best people taking care of you. We go through rigorous background checks, random drug testings and go through really really tough training just to get you from point A to B. Besides, the pilots are not just some dumb kids we pick up from the side of the street and put behind the wheel of a plane. They pretty much put in their hours with standard protocols just to fly that certain aircraft. So please,,, sit back, relax and enjoy your flight next time you fly.
I hope this clears you up... Have a wonderful day and God Bless. |

I don't ever get scared when flying. After so many flights, it becomes just as normal as waking up in the morning and brushing my teeth! If it makes you feel any better, during my training I learned that a plane has never gone down due to turbulence!! I've had some pretty bad turbulence, and the best thing you can do is just stay in your seat, and make sure your seatbelt is fastened. The guys up front know what they are doing, and have to go through recurrent training every year to practice in simulators for emergency situations...as well as the flight attendants! Flying is a lot safer than driving! |

I hate it so much and have to take prescription tranquillisers. Like you I watch the faces of the cabin crew to try to judge their reactions. I then convince myself that even if they knew we were in a terrible situation they would still smile. Turbulence is awful, it's even worse when the seat belt sign pings on. I really dread flying but have to do it although I don't think I will ever get over my fear. I do sympathise with you. |

Today's flights are the safest in history of aviation and the odds of a crash is as high as winning 3 mega million tkts back to back...so don't be afraid, just think good thoughts, take a deep breath and listen to some relaxing music. |

My wife is scared of flying, and no amount of valid reasoning will convince her that a metal tube full of soft squishy humans flying at 500 mph 30000 feet in the air is a good idea. Having a lot of knowledge of aircraft helps me explain all the noises that she hears...."what's that noise?", "that's the flaps being set for landing, so we can go slower and land safely", "It's not the aeroplane falling to bits is it?"..Etc, Etc. I am a good flyer and do not have any problems with turbulence, it doesnt even make me feel sick.
I have been scared only once, when coming into liverpool in a torrential downpour and with high winds and low cloud. I wouldnt have been surprised if we would have ended up sticking out of the side of the pennines.....The flight crew were fine all the way down though ,and even offered to buy her a drink to calm her nerves. I guess they only get scared when the captain gives his secret code across the tannoy.
All that pales into insignificance compared to Paris Taxi Drivers though......120mph to Charles degaulle airport made the flight back seem like a dream.
Also, if you find people who are scared of flying annoying, i wouldnt suggest you get on a plane, it is full of them! |

I used to be terrified of flying but when i moved to France it was the only quick way to get to uk so I had to do it, the first time i was bricking it and really worried that when i got to the airport i wouldn't be able to get on the plane for fear, but I did it and having landing at Standstead I decided that the trip round the M25 was far more frightening. Don't fancy long haul though not because I am scared but because it is so boring and you can't pop outside for a smoke very easily. |

I'm not afraid anymore, when I was younger. But the answer to your question is Yes many flight crew get scared. Only if the Turbulance is really really bad then I worry. (^_^) Cheer up you're not alone. (^_^) |

I am sure they are moderately trained in procedures to respond to things that may cause them or passengers to be in fear which wouldnt allow them to show it, unless of course the plane's goin down in flames> then i'm sure you'd see the signs! making the question a non issue vicky |

always right

Yes flight crew can get scared. I was on a flight years ago when we hit some real bad turbulence, I wasn't too bothered until a stewardess at the front went white as a sheet and burst into tears looking around for a way out. She totally freaked out. That set off half the passengers, tears and screams everywhere.
I'm still here to tell the tale so don't worry, even what appears to be bad turbulence is OK. Its still the safest way. |

Yes, I am sure that they get scared too, because they can talk to the captain and know what is going on. They only tell the passengers if they think that it is important enough to know. They don't tell everything because they don't want to put the passengers into a panic. |

I am sure at times--but they cannot show it! |

I think that the air-stewardesses spend so much time putting their face (make-up) on that they don't have time to get worried. |

sometimes, but at the initial training they tell you that you always have to hide fear and be calmed. Even if you know there's a wing missing lol! |
