they ask you to turn off all electronic devices on takeoff...use the airplane mode |

to use it once in flight you need to turn off the transmitting device on it, just keep it off until after takeoff and in descent though |

Just turn it off and put it in Airline mode (that should be an option).
You don't have to remove the SIM or anything like that.
I use my phone/PDA to listen to music and watch movies with no problem. |

It is better to obey the rules of the airline and keep your cell phone off. A few hours of music is not worth being called out and told to turn it off. |

The reality is that a mobile phone won't harm the airplane as long as the telephone mode is turned off (so-called "airplane mode"). If the phone doesn't have an "airplane mode," it should be left off.
Unfortunately, the law conflicts with reality. FAA regulations say that an airline operator must verify that an electronic device is safe before allowing it to be used. Since it's very difficult to prove that a device is safe (even when there is no reason to believe otherwise), most airlines don't bother, and simply prohibit the devices instead, at least during critical phases of flight (take-off and landing, or below 10,000 feet).
The same law requires that passengers obey cabin-crew instructions concerning the use of electronic devices. There are a few devices that cabin crews cannot prohibit, such as electric razors, but telephones are not on that list.
Also, the FCC separately prohibits the use of cellular telephones in flight, so even if the crew said it was okay, you still wouldn't be able to do it, legally (unless you have the "airplane mode"). |

Don;t be afraid to ask when you get onboard, different airlines and even different aircraft on the same airline have different policies. |

that is actually NOT true.. I am a former flight attendant, and the pilots have told me that it doesn't.. However, THAT being said, it is federal law that you abide by ALL rules of the flight crew, so the answer is...whatever your flight crew instructs you to do.. you should do it :D (the reason they instruct you to do certain things are set up by each individual airline's rules, so the flight crew doesn't pick and choose the rules, they just try to get ppl to comply or they will get in big trouble) |
