The number of incorrect answers that have been given thusfar have been staggering. On most airlines, a person who is age 17 will not need permission from parents to fly -- unaccompanied minor programs (which are, in their purest form, parental permission) do not usually apply to anyone over the age of 16. Exceptions may be made for international flights, but this is due to laws regarding minors traveling between countries more than the airlines' policies.
It should also be noted that a person under the age of 18 does not need photo identification in order to fly within the US, according to the TSA in the link below. Again, though, this will not apply for international flights -- necessary passports and/or visas must be carried depending on the destination.
The only issue that a person under the age of 18 may run across is in purchasing the ticket, since most people under the age of 18 do not have credit cards. Keep in mind, though, that tickets can also be purchased via travel agents or at the airport using cash. |

If your flying within it the Uk and Ireland then you can be 16. I think its he same if your going abroad aswell, because someone 16 or over, can accompany someone under 16 on an international flight with British Airways. So it should be the same with Virgin, Easyjet, Jet2, BMI, Be an all them. |

Ah, this catches my eye! I'm 19 & have travelled to see my Dad over seas for years... Okay, being 17; if you have or can get/pay for a DEBIT CARD then you'll be easily able to book a flight online to anywhere on the planet. Just make sure you give a VALID reason at the customs upon arrival at your destination & be sure you've researched a good idea on where you are heading once leaving the airport |

No. You need Government photo ID as everyone else does, but the only way you would need parental permission is if you're an UM and 17 is way beyond that. |

You're a minor, yes! |

Yes. I work at LAX and can guarantee that. First thing they ask for is identification...then they'll ask who you're traveling with. |
