Do i need to collect my baggage and check in again?

I am flying with US airlines from Gatwick to Seattle with a connecting flight in Charlotte. Will i need to collect my baggage in charlotte and check it in again for the connecting flight or will my bags go directly through to Seattle?

US Immigration and Customs do their stuff at the port of landing, not the point of entry. In your case, this is Charlotte. You will need to pick up your bags, clear Customs and then follow the signs to the transit bag security checks just past Customs. You do not need to check in again as you will have been checked in in London but you do need to pick up your bags, clear Customs and send them through the x-ray machines again for your domestic portion of the flight. Just follow the signs in Charlotte.

You will need to collect them. This is done for all flight entering the USA, when you leave the USA the bags will automatically be checked for you and you wont need to recheck them. Once you have walked through immigration you will be required to collect you bags and carry them through customs. Once through this there will be a few lines, one for each airline group and one to leave the airport, simply queue up and hand your bag over at the new baggage check point.

Guy before me has the best answer. Don't listen to the other ones. They failed to note that Gatwick to Charlotte is an international flight. You need to clear customs.

I suggest u ask when u check in the bags from gatwick, cos they will let you know if u need to check it in again, make sure u do, cos i remember when i came from KSA to London to Manchester my luggage stayed in Heathrow and took many weeks to get them back home, so make sure u ask,

Contrary to what most other people are saying I went to Las Vegas by United Airlines last year, catching a connecting flight in Chicago. I booked all the flights together and was assured it was just a connection, but when I arrived in Chicago all of us with connecting flights were told to go through customs and immigration, then we had to wait to pick up our luggage, and then we had to re-hand our luggage back in, then run through the airport, then queue for security and then run through the airport again to reach our connecting flight. Needless to say a whole group of us missed the connecting flight as that whole process took well over an hour. And when we were queueing for security other people in the queue were kind enough to let us jump the queue! Myself and my partner and a lot of other people on the same flight had to wait over 5 hours for another flight to Las Vegas. I lost the whole first night of my holiday, and when I wrote to United Airlines to complain they said that this was standard procedure.

I would make sure before you fly that they have given you a suitable connection time. I had 80 minutes and it was not long enough.

I wish you better luck than me!

As long as you are with US airlines all the way to Seattle they should just check them right through. Would be unsual if they didn't - best idea to check their website or give them a call just to double check.

Have a nice trip!

You won't need to check in again. they'll go straight thru.

when you check in at Gatwick, you will notice your baggage tag will have 2 destinations, Charlotte and Seattle,so the baggage handlers will know to change it onto other flight.
the check in staff should also give you give you your seat number for both flights, so if this is not done, ask about it.
You will not have to check in again as, you should not be leaving the departure lounge, just check to see what gate the Seattle flight is going from,in Charlotte as I guess they wont have that information in Gatwick

First answer is correct, they will go straight through.

not unless you switching Airlines and even then you shouldn't have to the only time you have to recheck is when you fly oversees (especially when your coming back from other countries)

If you have already booked the connecting flight then you will only check your bags once and collect them at Seattle, unless of course you are flying with BA then you may find them in Shanghai
