Do plane fares usually get cheaper if you wait until closer to your departure date to buy?

I'm going to San Francisco in October but the prices seem really expensive at the moment. I'm not sure if they'll get better or worse the longer I leave it.

Thanks!

no it doesnt, it's basically the opposite! the people at the travel agency know that some people will need flights urgently and so they take advantage of it, however in some cases new flights might be sechduled and they might be cheper, so i'd say that you wait a while and see what comes up and also, try different agiences!

It gets more expensive. You should buy your ticket at least 14 days before traveling. Sometimes people think that if you walk up at the last minute, the airlines will sell you a ticket for a lower price because they want a body in that empty seat. That is no longer the case. With airlines cutting capacity, the earlier you book, the better chance you will get a seat on a flight that suits your travel schedule.

They get worse.I've just been into a travel agent an hour ago as she says the cheaper flights go quick. Also don't forget the price of oil is shooting up! Book as soon as poss to save money.

Go to www.farecompare.com set up an alert

My other half flies weekly from CA to the mid USA......he bought his tickets one month in advance.........and before the one month.....as the travel date nears we go on line and find out the fare is cheaper........He flies out on Sunday and back on Thursday so he has to book ahead of time for guarantee evening flight.

If you want to make sure you have a flight and you can afford it.......then make your reservation.........Airlines are putting smaller planes into the air........flying slower.......and twice a week.......his planes are delayed from 1 to 4 hours so they can get a full plane........This is on American too. Southwest was flat horrible for him to fly twice a week.......he said it was like a bus making stops.....and he would get in up to 8 hours late both ways.....which if you have to work in the AM.....then you are exhausted for the week.

People are not traveling........We only see CA plates here in So Cal........very very few out of state plates.......The hotels and resorts are half empty too.........

Noooooooooo! They get more expensive each day closer to departure. Book now if you have the money.

It will probably get more expensive the closer you leave it...they bump prices up the closer it gets to the destination date as it is usually business people getting last minute deals to go to business meetings etc...that's one of the ways they make they're money...I'd book it as soon as possible...it will save you money especially with the fuel prices on the increase too...they have increased the fuel taxation on flights twice already in the last month...you never know when they will do it again...like I say though I would book it now because if they do that at least it won't affect your price...

Nope.

Its quite the opposite. Sometimes you will end up paying the full coach fare. Which can be 5 to 10 times as expensive as the lowest fares for that route.

The best time to buy a ticket statistically is between 3 and 6 weeks from date of departure.

megaproxy
no they cost more. and the fact fule prices are going through the roof, buy now before they change the prices up again

If you are flying on a major carrier, like BA or AA, then you can get discount tickets from specialist discount flight companies close to the departure date, but these are not always guaranteed. The carrier wants to fill the plane, so they will sell off the spare seats (often near the emergency exits, where many people don't like to sit) at a discounted rate (although this may only be the case with unpopular routes). On budget airlaines, it works the other way around. The earlier you book, the less you pay, and as the flight fills up, the tickets get sold at a premium.

Try searching for discount air fares. One company I have used for transatlantic flights succesfully in the past is Philleas Fogg Travel, but they are UK based.
