Do you have a fear or had a fear of flying in a plane?

How did you get over it? See, my boyfriend works at the airport now and he has major discounts on flying and he wants to take a family vacation, but I'm totally freaked. is there a medication I can take or something I can do like hypnosis or something to get over it in the next couple of months???

Yes I do. I am flying from Boston to Denver then Denver to Co. Springs tomorrow with my 4 year old. Have not flown in 20 years. I have had many panic attacks this week but I do know deep down it is safer. I did some research this week to help me feel better. Since I have been born (1971) less then 10 US plane crashes. There are 1000's up in the air a day. There is a 1 in 11million chance you will die in a plane accident and a 1-5000 chance you will die in a car accident. I checked the weather from Boston to Denver to see what to expect as far as bumpy ride related to weather. Bringing my 4 year old helps because I know I have to stay tough for him. You could take some night time cold medicine or benadryl to make you sleepy. Take it like an hour for your plane leaves. You could ask your doctor to prescribe you a valium.

Only since 9/11. I used to love flying. You could ask your doctor for a mild sedative to help you through your first few flights. A drink or two on the plane would help if you don't have a sedative as sedatives and alcohol don't mix. Have you flown before? If not the fear may disipate with a nice man by your side.

I used to. I suggest you try what I did. Go take flying lessons. Being a passenger might cure the problem but I think it would take much longer.

I believe there are courses teaching people how to get over the fear run by some airports.
my bf learned how to live with it, he takes valium 20 minutes before the take-off.after valium u dont give a damn if you're flying or playing chess in the park.
it shouldn't be over-used as it is addictive
only available with a prescription.unless u live in thailand (over the counter)

I used to have an intense fear of flying. I would have panic attacks on the plane.

I got over it because I just ended up flying so much, and flying from Japan to NYC will definitely cure your phobia. I went from never flying to flying at least once a month...

Repetition will help you get over your fear.

But for short term fix, I suggest take a few sleeping pills if the flight is long enough... if not then take a book, ipod, portable dvd play, laptop, or anything to divert your attention. Eating also made it more tolerable for me the first few times...

I fear the airports more than flying now. they put you thru such hell, and it's such a pain to navigate thru them anymore...

it's really nothing to fear...

i really don't have a 'fear' of flying but do get nervous about it, esp. take offs/landings; but once we're at cruising altitude (provided there's no turbulence; if turbulence hits, i grip onto the arm rest & pray!!!), i'm ok.

don't suggest u take anything as u don't know how you'll react to it, it's fine if u can sleep it off during the flight, otherwise, you'll be groggy & miserable.

i used to get motion sickness on plane & would take a Gravol (this makes u slightly drowsy and i would just sleep it off). some people can't sleep on planes & they're wide awake for the whole flight. i had a friend who sat & watched her husband sleep for the whole flight from canada to hong kong (that's like 16hrs !!!) - she couldn't sleep a wink.

also, can bring some things to do on the plane to keep u busy, read, music, etc. it'll be better if your plane had a personal tv in front. if not, can bring a portable dvd player & bring your own dvds to watch.

don't worry too much & enjoy this excellent benefit!!!

I do not have a fear of flying. I have a fear of crashing. For the most part, I do not have any problems with turbulence. But, if the turbulence is severe, I start to worry.

I'm fine on planes as long as no one gets on the intercom and says "Welcome to flight Six Sixty Six!"

I'm sure there are sleep meds you can take, or you can just bring some things to do while on the plane that will keep you distracted from fearing the flight attendants or whatever it is that bothers you. :)

I'm fine with it but I still worry on take off and on landings.

So, for 10 minutes at the beginning of the flight and 10 minutes at the end of the flight, I can deal with it.

Square Pants
nothing can cure your fear of flying.. just be on board, nothing can happen to you.. after all, there are 70% more likely for you to get strucked by ligthning than get involved in air crash..

I have no fear of flying. Large commercial airplanes are extremely safe. You are more likely to die in a car accident. Once I get on a plane, I see no point to worrying about it. Whatever happens, happens and there is usually very little you could do about it in the extremely unlikely event there is a real problem.

never did get over it and have flown everywhere i hate it..i hate the take off i hate the landing and i really hate being in the air period..i dont get up to go to the bathroom or stretch or anything..i stay awake so i will know if the plane is gonna crash so i can get prepared..the longest flight was over ten hours to japan..they all sucked

Kilene
I used to be afraid of flying...but since I worked at Delta Air Lines (ticket agent and then Ramp Agent) I got used to it. It's actually not that bad...especially if you find something to do...like read books or have someone talk to you.
