Precious Pisces

Do you think it's fair for airlines to charge an extra fee to seat obese people?

It is to some degree because it will (somehow) encourage obese people to live healthier by the increased cost of an airline ticket.

But then again, it seems as if it's a bit prejudice against obese people to charge extra just cause they may be overweight, whether it be a medical condition or just poor dieting.

Yes. Even when they take up only one seat, their extra weight costs the airline more for fuel. In aviation, every pound costs money. It only seems fair to make each passenger pay the cost of transporting himself. So fat people should have to pay more than thin people, in order to be completely fair.

If an extra seat is required, then this is even more true, because it also reduces the number of passengers, and since they all must share the cost of the flight, the cost per passenger rises.

Yes. Unless they are medically obese - By which I mean unable to lose weight or retain lower weight due to a medical reason. In this case they should have a signed letter from the hospital when they send off for tickets. The rest should all pay extra - its not fair to the guys sitting next to them to endure cramped space because someone is too fat to fit in one seat.

TrueLoveNeverDies
Yes, I think that it is very fair. Especially if they require more than one seat to fit!

well yeah.. i mean if theyre taking up more space then they should be. its like saying.. i have 10 shirts and they fit most.. but for a large person i have to sew 2 together.. dont you think they should be charged more for that?

Tessa V
Depends if the person needs lot's of room. But if it's just for the one seat they should be fair and keep it the same. Btw someone might need double seat i've seen it before.

In December, I flew from NY to LA and sat next to a man who easily was +400 lbs.

I have nothing against someone based on their weight, but he couldn't fit in his seat without lifting up the armrest near me and spilling over into my seat.

Try sitting cramped with someone pushing on you with higher than average body heat and having a huge sweat spot on your jeans in your thigh area. A stranger's sweat. And this for 6 hrs.

So yes, I think it's fair.

no it makes obese people not want to travel and for an airline to do this is just rude!!

thisismyyahoo
yep, completely.

being obese is hardly a human right,
if their gonna add extra weight to the plane, they should pay for it, just like everyone does with their luggage.

very very very fair
it takes more gas to fly obese people from one point to another
because they have a higher mass
but
you can compensate if you bring less luggage
then your share of weight can equal the average person's weight

no thats just plain rude.
