Sadly we have little real choice, so lock everything. and do not put anything of real value (Like cameras or laptops) in your checked baggage.
Remember that London Heathrow is not known as Thiefrow for nothing.

If I have to check bags I have little options. I do still lock them, if within the TSA jurisdiction I put the TSA friendly locks on them. |

No, baggage is sometimes misdirected or lost for good and haven't you seen how they throw the bags onto the ramps? That's why I do not put the following things in checked baggage: medication I will need, expensive jewelry, watches, cash, laptop or other fragile items, items of sentimental value that can't be replaced. |

I never put anything of value into my checked bags, especially important documents. I also never put my makeup, hair appliances, meds, or other personal care items in my checked bags--I pretty much just use my checked bags for clothes and shoes, and put everything else in my carry-on |

Always keep any valuables and spare clothes and medication in your hand (carry on) luggage. 95% of luggage arrives at its destination, there is always the chance that you may fall into the 5%, the more you travel the more chance you have of a suitcase going astray.
The Airport systems are mostly computerised now and make sure you put the address at your destination on the suitcase. Usually if it misses your flight it will turn up on the next one and they will deliver it for you. The only other option you have is to manage with Hand luggage only |
