Does alcohol effect you more on an airplane?

When you drink on any airplane, does the alcohol effect you more from the altitude of being in the air than it would when drinking on the ground?

Yes. The effects are intensified at higher altitudes, and even factoring in the pressurization of the cabin, you will feel more intoxicated more quickly in an airplane than on the ground. This is because reduced pressure at altitude reduces the ability of the blood to absorb oxygen. Also, the lack of moisture in cabin air causes you to absorb any fluids faster.

Yes.

Even at higher altitudes, sober people will have an effect of the lower amount of oxygen per volume. As pressure decreases (increase in altitude) the number of particles/molecules/atoms per volume decreases (includes oxygen).

This being said, there have been numerous studies that have confirmed that drinking at a higher altitude "impairs" one moreso than at a lower altitude. However, the BAC does not change whether you are drinking on the ground or drinking in the air. Therefore, I would speculate that the effect is mainly due to a decrease in the amount of oxygen available for your brain and body to use.

its makes everyone better looking on the plane.

yes, it's the altitude

Mac
yes! because the air is thinner, you will get drunk quicker and you will be very dehydrated and thats not good, esp 30k up in the air.

ethansma24
Yes, it does. Like everyone else said it's due to the altitude/cabin pressure/etc.

Kevin
Each drink increases your physiological altitude by 2,000 feet. If standard cabin pressure is 8,000 feet that means as you finish your second drink it has the same effect on your body as killing a 6 pack.

I'm not a medical type but a flight surgeon told me that rule of thumb.

An0nym0us mAn1Ac
Yes. I think it's due to the low cabin pressure.
