This depends on your destination. There are many local flights within the EU, USA, Asia, etc. Try to first look through cheap airfare on Yahoo, they provide instant feedback from several different websites.
Contact your local travel agency too just in case (however, they usually only have the bigger airplane companies and will put a commission fee)
For Europe, try searching for ryanair or easyjet

Try the discount websites listed, but also check with airlines' websites. I found a $792.47 (tax included) round-trip flight nonstop from JFK to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific's own site. I couldn't find it on Orbitz and the like. My travel agent had an $888 fare. You might want to check with a travel agent, although it's not a website. Good luck!
