Does anyone suffer from severe flying anxiety?? |
My husband and I are going on a cruise in jan and we have to fly to Ft. laud. I have no anxiety about the cruise, but I am very frightened of flying. I get on the plane and my heart starts to race.
I am on Paroxetine (generic for paxil) and it helps some, but I am still nervous about my our airplane ride.
Does anyone else have this and do you take something? I was going to go to my dr for some xanax, but I am afraid that will not work.
Any suggestions? Other than "don't go". |

yes i did.i was scared to death to fly,I just knew I would crash...I was 50 years old and had never flown. My first trip was to hawaii, and a very long one,a lot longer than the one you are taking.I also take Paxil, weird huh? anyway there is nothing to fear but fear its self. The only way you will ever overcome this fear is to face it head on....I wasn,t on paxil when i flew so i used benadryl and I got easy after i got on the plane and watched everyone so calm, and then we watched a movie, and i was fine....Its just the fear that you are fearing, its not real....its like sitting in your own living room, its cosy and you will enjoy it...I would be more fearful of that cruise,Im scared to death od water, but i hear thats a lot of fun,so now i will have to concur that fear next.good luck |

yes, i do. flying scares the pants off me. :)
i have flown 3x in my life time and i felt like i was trapped once i was inside the jet. i needed air and i panicked.
i went to a doctor and he gave me some pills to calm me before i got on the flight, he informed me alot of people have anxiety when they fly, so it is normal.
i've seen too many movies/ disasters about jets, thats where my fear comes from. |

There is no place on earth I would fly to. Not today or tomorrow.
There was a period in my life when I loved to fly. But after seeing as many crashes as I have and then along came 9/11 and that pretty much did it for me.
I am not paranoid, but there just isn't anywhere I will ever need to get in that big enough hurry that I have to fly.
I have no answer to your dilemma, but to say what you don't want to hear. |

Lookin at you hit the nail on the head. I used to fly all over the place, but after 911 I haven't flown at all and have no desire to do so. I do believe it would be impossible to hijack a plane with today's security. Try to mentally prepare for the flight and take some drug that calms you down like muscle relaxers. |

I can't stand airplanes!!! I have not been on one in 17 years and can't imagine even getting on one...... but if you have no choice you will have to just suck it up and hope for the best... airplanes really are a safe mode of transportation... maybe you should talk to your doctor about a sedative(if its that bad)..Either way good luck!!.. |

My biggest suggestion would be to educate yourself about the actual safety record of flying. It's actually far safer in the air than on the ground, statistically.
Another thing that might help would be to educate yourself about flying in general. Try finding a flight instructor to talk to, to learn a bit about how airplanes fly. If you can, try taking a discovery flight, where you can actually see firsthand what goes into flying an airplane.
I can't say that I've ever had any anxiety about flying...in fact, I'm a student pilot right now. I just think that education is usually the best way to conquer fear. |
