Thank you for for your question.
It appears not. User Lori P asked "Does a S.S. card count as a valid form of i.d. when boarding a plane? We are flying air tran from hartsfield?"
The best answer went to "southrntrnzplnt" who answered:
Ok, I worked for Delta and here is the answer.....YES YES YES you can use it.....he will have to use the ticket, the social security card and one more form of ID such as a birth certificate, voter ID card, huting/fishing liscense...even a vehicle registration can be used....it just has to be 2 forms of non-photo government issued valid ID if you do not have a current liscense. A social security card IS issued by a government agency so it will work. Don't worry he can board the airplane, he will just be a selectee....meaning a full search, so arrive at the airport in plenty of time and check in at the ticket counter, not the kiosk. That way they can document his reservation so when he returns they will see that he did not have valid photo ID and will just be a selectee.
from Airtran.com
All passengers over the age of 18 must present a valid, government issued photo ID (such as a driver's license, U.S. Military ID card or passport) upon check-in and at the TSA screening checkpoint. Travel to/from Grand Bahama Island is considered international travel. We encourage you to contact U.S. Customs at 202-927-6724 to request a copy of their brochure, "Know Before You Go." If you are unfamiliar with the documentation requirements for international travel, please contact AirTran Airways Reservations at 800-AIR-TRAN or 678-254-7999 in Atlanta.
from delta.com
Select from the following:
One unexpired form of local or federal government-issued photo id, such as:
Passport
Driver's License
Military ID
Or two unexpired forms of non-photo id—one must be issued by a state or federal agency
the post from Delta is the same on all airlines, just spells it out better that Airtran.
According to airtran, you need the photo ID to fly.
A similar question has been posted on a Fodor travel forum where it was suggested that you contact the relevant airline to see what they will accept. It is suggested that a student ID card has been accepted.
I hope that your daughter has a good trip.

It depends on your state and country. At best, a school library card (they have photo ID in Australia on most state school library cards) will suffice. However, go to a DMV (US) or equivalant and ask about phot ids. Any way, the best place to ask is the airline that she is flying with. They'll let you know! |

Depending on where you are going but it would be best for her.. and easier for you..go to local DMV and get an ID card or call the airlines to know for sure. you definately need her birth certificate if no ID |

i am 13 and i fly alone alot, no he does not but they will hold him on plane till everybody elose is off then they will walk him off and if they dont find the people that are suppose to pick him up they will cal the police and do all that stuff. the people picking him up must have the id that u regesterd and everything like that also. if they dont have id on them then that would probably be bad

Not sure. But, I work for the Driver License division, and we make ID's also. However, most states, if you go in for a photo ID, it will take 2-4 weeks for the hard copy to come to you. So, if you need one, it would be best to go in as soon as you can, and not wait for the last minute.
You will probably need a state certified birth certificate (usually hospital certificates are NOT accepted) may need a second proof of identification. School ID usually works for this. May need also a Social Security card.
Photo copies are never accepted as proof of anything, so make sure you have originals.
You should be able to look up the things needed on your state's website. |

which one is it people yes or no. we have some yes and we have some no. I know when my daughter flew (she is six years old) she had to use one of the following. Her birth certificate, shot records, or social security card. It might be the same for a 13 year old too. |

It depends on the airlines policy. My best guess is no but check with the airlines. |

Wow, someone actually posted an answer of mine.
But to confirm, no you do not need an ID to travel domestically with in the US. Passengers under 18 are not required to show proof of ID to fly. Only when you fly internationally will you need a passport or if you are traveling to Mexico or Canada. You will have to then show proof of US citizenship. |
