When I traveled to America at the age of 8 (I was younger actually - my brother could have possibly been 8) we never had any flight socks.
Because UK -> America is a longer flight than many others, you might want to invest in some - however we took regular walks around the plane - sometimes walking to look out of the big window at the back is fun!!! (if they have one that is)
I'm sure it won't be the end of the world if you don't invest in some though - just make sure he keeps his legs active - either by walking around for a bit or finding a quiet place at the back and bending his legs.
Because he is 8 - he should be absolutley fine. From what I remember flight socks are a bit dear??? :/ I'm not sure if they work that well either.
Oh wow, America. Where abouts??? I hope he has a good time :)

No.
The risk of DVT and the need for flight socks in general is over hyped.
Small children are even less likely to need them since they are less likely to be dehydrated by consuming alcohol (we hope!) and they are not as restricted in movement by closely pitched aircraft seats.
LEETAH
Most carriers would supply on long haul flights especially...check with the carrier..im guessing BA? if so, they do provide.

No, my brother went to the US with us when he was tiny (maybe 2 years old) and he didn'tt need them. Younger kids are more active anyway, so they don't tend to get the ankle swelling like we do!
Al Zymer
No, but make sure he/she does not sleep in a cramped position for too long. Stretching, walking around, and foot and leg exercising is advised for ALL long distance travellers: also drink plenty of water.

Geoff the skier
Yes - much cheaper than a plane. Tell him to take them off on his final approach to JFK.
